Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / How to find a stud for breeding later in the year
- By Lola-Rosie [gb] Date 25.04.20 18:42 UTC Edited 27.04.20 09:36 UTC
Im new on here so please dont shoot me down.
I will be looking for a stud to breed with both my bitches later in the year. Obviously, if we are socialising safely.
Can anyone advise how I advertise to find a stud?
Thanks
Chris

Have you spoken to the breeder/s of your bitches? They will be best placed to advise you on stud dogs who will compliment your girls and further the breed well.

You're unlikely to find a stud dog that would be the ideal partner for both your bitches, because your bitches will have different strengths and weaknesses (even though you might think they're both perfect! ).  And having two litters at the same time isn't ideal.

Welcome to the forum

You may find this article of some interest: Should I breed from my pet bitch?.

A great deal of consideration should be given before breeding in the present climate.

Are you thinking of buying a stud dog - if so, think again!!   Once he has been used on even just one of your girls, he's going to be a passenger - at a time when presumably you are breeding to keep a puppy (or two?) for your next generation.   With the oldies, which I hope you will keep eventually, the numbers quickly creap up.   I have to also agree that having one stud dog for both your girls would be a mistake because even with litter sisters, each has their own faults (yes!) and so may not gel with the stud dog.

Talk to the breeder of your bitches - they should help you find a suitable stud dog, for each, if you don't intend to buy in.

As above if you got your girls from a.good breeder they should be able to advise you on lines/dogs that may complement your girls or ones best to avoid with them. Usually a breeders shop window would be shows, working triles, sporting comps ect but at the moment that's not possible although breeders often start the search well in advance, you may be best waiting till next year to give yourself more time see what's about and to research lines.
Have you had all the recommend health testing for your breed done on your girls? Asking as if not then this will mean responsible stud owners will not allow you to use their boys.

Thank you for advice - my girls come into heat at different times so I am planning 9 months apart.
I haven’t managed to find any [colour/breed removed] within 100 miles travel.

As above, have you spoken to the breeder of your bitches, as they may be able to help.

As for 100 miles, I wish I could find a dog as close when I have a litter.  All the dogs I like to compliment the pedigree of my girls, proven, with the right health tests etc, are the other end/side of the country.  Be prepared to travel further for the right dog.

Thank you for advice. Much appreciated.
I am preparing for next year or whenever our vets are fully open, in the event of complications.
I am planning 9 months apart and maybe same stud but not set if, like you say they may not be suited to both.
At the moment I don’t have any options as struggling to find a [removed] within 100 miles of[removed]Thanks again

I live North of Sheffield, and the stud dog I want to use next time round is on the South coast.  Previously I've travelled to North Wales, and the closest dog was an hour and a half away in Cheshire.  I've also travelled down to the South coast three times, and sadly was unsuccessful in getting a good mating, or even AI.  The right stud dog is where it is, whether or not you get a successful mating is another matter, and even back up plans don't always come to fruition.

Thanks for advice.
Yes I am planning for next year, all being well with the re opening of our vet practices.
I have had vet checks done.
I would like to try for 9 months apart but finding a [removed] within 100 miles is proving difficult.
It will happen if the time and stud is right.
Thanks again

> within 100 miles is proving difficult

As others have said you are going to have to be prepared to travel more than 100 miles.

Like others have said, they travel a lot further for the right male to suit their bitch, I certainly have!!

>My breeder has a recommend but is down country.

Don't let distance deter you from using the right dog. Be prepared for at least a 4-hour each-way drive to the dog most likely to give you a healthy litter. (For one litter I went from the Midlands of England to the west coast of Ireland to use the best dog.)

"Don't let distance deter you from using the right dog"....

Puts me in mind of a mating I wanted, having seen the dog up in Canada at one of our Specialty Shows.   He lived in Philadelphia (outskirts) and we just outside Toronto.   Yes I could have gone to a dog far closer, but he was right for her.

Hello Chris
Be prepared to travel for the perfect stud, check the health tests. Best place is here have a look in the stud section! We own stud dogs and people have traveled 4 hours to use our boys !

I hope you will find one which will match your girls, also low COI rating (interbreeding %)
Good luck
