Well I did a search as I was sure this topic has been dealt with before, but it came up with nothing...so here goes.
I need some advice. I bought in a bitch when she was 10 months. She had been to a home already, it hadn't worked out so she was returned to the breeder. I then got her. From the time she has been with me (6 months now) she has always mounted one of my other bitches (spayed) and will try to mount the other entire one, but gets snapped at. Even the spayed bitch gets annoyed with her sometimes, but it doesn't seem to deter her. At first I put it down to age, then she came in season, had a phantom pregnancy and has got over that. All the while she still mounts the others.
What can I do to stop it? Is it worth having a blood test done to check her hormone levels? I have tried just ignoring it, but I worry that the other bitch will get so fed up, a fight will start.
Any advice greatly appreciated as I am getting no where fast :(

Hi
I think it might come down to what we talked about - particulary with no-one being around to deter such behaviour before she came to you, if you see what I mean? Don't know anything about hormone levels, but I do know my dalmatian bitch used to mount my dog at times, usually before coming into season so I guess that might have something to do with it?
Perhaps there is something herbal you could give her to calm her down a bit?

As far as I know mounting is a way of dominace not anything sexual unless they are breeding.
I just had my female spayed not that long ago and she still mounts my other dogs, and they in return do this also and they are fixed. I do tell them no and spray them with water.

I have tried the water bit, but to no avail! She was raised in a pen in a barn and I do wonder if it has anything to do with lack of socialisation with other dogs? It's almost as if it's her way of playing..does that make sense?

Grace

I have a bitch who does this as well - but only to her mother and one of her brothers. She does it after supper when she's feeling happy - my two males do it to annoy each other!...a quick grab and then off and around the house at a gallop! They all seem to do it purely for fun - it's not sexual and not dominant with mine anyway - just normal canine behaviour as far as I know. The one being mounted will spin round and swear at the other, but that's all. But they are a family group who are extremely weel settled in their pack order, which helps! :)

Thanks for that Janet :) Makes me feel a bit better. We have five dogs and they do generally do get on very well, the only thing is this one mounting everyone! both my boys are neutered, and it doesn't seem to bother them...bothers me though:rolleyes: Guess I'll just have to get over this human feeling thing ;)

Recently I went to a friend's house for coffee - it was a little embarrassing with her 5 dogs "playing trains" - all in a line one behind the other....!!!:o :D She was so used to it she hardly noticed ....just as well I wasn't the vicar!

Just think - you could look out of your kitchen window one morning to see 6 Great Danes and an Akita X doing the conga across the garden
