Hi all, my partner and I are looking for an Akita pup. We have'nt had one before but really like the breed. If anyone out there has any information or advice it would be much appreciated. We live in a five bed semi in a small village in Somerset. We have a large garden and we are surrounded by open countryside. Our family consists of two little ones (kids!), two ginger cats, and a couple of guinea pigs. We sadly had to put our boxer to sleep last October, aged thirteen. She was an absolute favourite and completely irreplacable, which is why we have decided to go for something different and have an Akita, as they are a breed on their own. Please could you advise us on male/female; things to be cautious of and hints in finding the 'right one'. Also training etc. Look forward to hearing from you. H&J

Hi
unfortunately Akitas have become very popular too quickly and so many people have jumped at the chance supplying the demand and are breeding without health checks, studying pedigrees etc and hence there are a lot of very 'dodgy' Akitas out there.
I would recommend you go to a reputable breeder who has done all neccessary checks. It might be an idea to contact the breed club and I'm sure they will help steer you in the right direction. They will probably know of any litters available aswell.

I toatally agree with Archer. Do be carefull when buying an Akita. We have 1 and she is a lovely dog, but you can get bad ones, and with kids you do have to be carefull. Don't be put off though by bad reports just be wary.

I got in touch with the KC for registered breeders having done a good deal of reading on the breed and then talked to a couple of breeders and ended up getting mine from a breeder in Newport Wales (quite close to somerset) , although I am based in Nottingham,I can thoroughly recommend them as my Akita bitch is a wonderful dog.
However they are a handful and are very stubborn (iMHO) but worth every minute and she gets on wonderfully with my lab pup that I got later on (she seems to mother her!)
