Hi everyone My [medium sized] is 58 days and started digging up the blankets in her whelping box today, intermittently panting heavily and temperature has dropped to 37. I managed to get her to eat her dinner but she threw it up :(
I’ve been by her side all day and she just panting heavily but no signs of contractions, just worried it’s a bit early
My last girls have generally gone full term xx

Is that timing from first/second mating? What have the pups movements been like, I'm not an experienced breeder, but from the small amount of litters I've had, pups tend to go quiet, and do drop down prior to whelping. I don't really go on temperatures as they can easily be wrongly taken. My last litter was a few days early, but then she had 11 pups in there, so there wasn't really room to keep them in any longer.

I have a breed that whelps (quite normally) on day 56. Pups have fully developed lungs. So I wouldn't be in the least concerned on day 58, but I would bear in mind that it could possibly be inertia, which would be dangerous. Keep a very close eye on her. I can usually tell it's inertia by that staring look in their eyes, and it's then a desperate dash to the vet (usually out of hours) for an emergency section.
I'm another one who never, ever goes on temperature.

Hi unfortunately she did have an emergency c section and only 2 pups survived , 2 were dead inside and she started heavy bleeding yesterday morning. she will feed them if we sit in the whelping box with her but she won’t stay in with them or clean them , I tried to see if she would clean one and she turns her head away. I’m happy she’s feeding them of course but I desperately want her to bond and care for them
Any other people have this problem and could it be fixed ? X

What you have described is not rejection, she is feeding them and that is the most important thing. After a section it can take time for instincts to kick in. Spend all of your time with her and the pups beside the whelping box. Keep encouraging her and I’m sure it will come.

I had this with one bitch, who did take a while to bond. Your girl will be reassured if you are with her. I even sleep right next to the whelping box as a matter of course. Always have done, as it helps the bitch. Usually for about 3 weeks minimum.

Give her time. She's very bewildered about all that's happened to her, and especially if this is her first litter, she has no idea that these strange scary creatures with the scratchy nails near her sore wound are hers. She'll need someone with her 24/7 (it's sensible to do this anyway, section or no section) at least till their eyes are open and she'll come round to the idea of what to do with them. Smearing honey on the puppies' bottoms can encourage her to lick it off and hopefully instinct will start to kick in.
Is she on any pain meds? Dogs do take a while after c-sections before their maternal instincts kick in - if you can wipe something on a pup which she might want to lick off, you can kick start the cleaning.
But another reason dogs may behave like this, is because they are in pain and vets often don't send them home with sufficient pain medication. What has your vet given you for pain management?
