Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / My 4 weeks old puppy has severe constipation
- By Nita [id] Date 22.03.20 05:00 UTC
I hv 4 weeks old puppy who has severe constipation. This problem has been going on even since she's 2 weeks old. She's suckling only from her momma and I add a bit goat milk sometimes if I think she's not drink enough. It's very hard to stimulate her to poop that I can sit an hour just to rub her anus with warm cloth. She also looks stress a lot everytime I help her to poop coz she can't pass the stool. I search in the internet but there's no such article can explain what are the problems. I hv to give her enema when it's already more than 48 hours she cannot pass the stool, and still she's become constipated again the next day. It must be unsual for a puppy has prolonged constipation like that right ? I 'm curious if there's a problem with her nerves in her bowel so the peristaltic move is not working well or maybe unbalance microbes in her bowel or what kind of the possibilities the diagnoses for this issue ? Thx

What did the vet say ?

Well it's been 3 days I put my pup on clinic and the vet still has no answer what happens with her. I'm kinda upset too coz they told me she still has not poop from the first day I took my pup there. They gave her enema yesterday but it's not working. I usually wipe her bottom intensely even if it has to take hours to make sure she pass the stool. I guess the vet there is not that care enough about how dangerous it could be if my pup can't poop till 3 days. I plan to visit her this afternoon coz the clinic is far away from my home. I hope I can help to stimulate her to poop by myself before it's too late.

Is she eating any solid food at all.
At 4 weeks most pups are on solid food and still drinking from dam.
You could try small amount of liquid paraffin to try and ease her.

Does she try to poop by walking around and squatting and nothing is coming out and she's just straining?  Or is she not even trying?

A client's 4 week old pup had the same problem and it turned out to be that the rectum wasn't connected to the bowel. While to pup was on milk it was managing to survive without really pooing, but once on solids the problem became very noticeable. Surgery was attempted but sadly was unsuccessful and the pup was put to sleep.

Before you give any laxative, I'd have to know whether physically her bowel is correct - able to produce a stool.  Giving a laxative could be dangerous!!

I think that you need to change your vet.
