Topic Dog Boards / Health / Blind Puppy Won't Eat Since Weaned
- By Patriots 4 Pets [us] Date 21.03.20 02:26 UTC
I am with an animal rescue and we have an 8 week old blind puppy that was "weaned" at the same time as the balance of the litter.  It was not realized until mom was pulled from the litter that the pup was blind.  He will not make any effort to eat - not dry food, canned food, mush, etc.,  Any suggestions on how to train this pup to eat?  He is losing weight and cries constantly.  Mom is now dry so no chance at putting pup back on her for a little while longer so much find solution right away.

This poor puppy needs to be seen by a vet asap. I suspect there is far more wrong with him than just blindness.

I know it's hard to make such decisions, but apart from this puppy must see a vet because I'd too suspect there's more going on than only being unsighted (you should need to TRAIN a puppy or any other dog to eat), you may be looking at what's in this puppy's best interest if he is going to be permanently blind as, unless you or another working at the Rescue Centre,  keep it, what kind of life will it have going forward?

Finding a blind puppy a wonderful home is not difficult.  The blindness is not the issue.  The puppy is completely healthy except for that Per multiple vets.

Has already seen the vet - your suspicions are incorrect but thanks for the suggestion.

Scraped steak. If the puppy won't eat that I expect there's little hope of it eating anything else.

Have you been hand feeding the pup ?
Sometimes hand feeding slightly warmed food like cooked chicken shredded will stimulate eating because of the smell as opposed to offering commerical food. I've never fed commerical food having fed ny dogs raw food since the mid 1950s so cannot offer advice on commercial feeding

Is the puppy drinking ?

Try offering some RAW meat.
I have never come across a puppy that has not liked or been very interested in the natural product.
