I have noticed yesterday - after she managed to get a small cut on her foot that my whippet pup has somewhat dry pads- the largest ones on back feet- they look dry and have slight cracks in them. it has been very wet/muddy lately which I think is a factor but I am a little concerned. this is very recent- i check her feet and this has happened in last few days.
can anyone recommend a product to moisturise her pads please? I am worried these cracks could get sore and be a route for infection if not dealt with. she is an 8/9 month old whippet
many thanks

ps they are not sore or hot, she is not licking or limping but I want them back to nice smooth pads before we get to that point

Paw wax or ordinary Vaseline will work.

is there much in it between mushers and vasaline? already shoved vasaline on her this morning with no obvious effect (I have no patience lol) that mushers stuff seems a pretty amazing price for a very small tin.. I don't mind if mega effective but is there much difference? are any of the other (cheaper) paw wax brands any good?

It isn't going to show any effect after only a few hours!! You will have to wait some days, just like when a person has chapped hands!!

I said I have no patience!!! just want to make sure I use the most effective product as even I accept it will take a while lol

Don't talk to me about Whippets and feet. This is new for me, this being my first Whippet (now over 11). She has a corn on the same digit, both front legs. All has been fine for months, after a dental when my vet was able to get deep into the corn. However for the past few days she's been limping and not wanting to put her left front foot to the ground. I had her in (vet) on Friday and the corn hulled and she came home with a dressing which lasted on her for all of 50 minutes (she didn't pull it off, it just slid down her leg). She was no better after the weekend and I took her back to the vet who said the corn was pretty much out but the pad was quite thickened which he feels is infection and ? there might be something in there. She's on antibiotics and Metacam and I have to get her back on Friday next. He told me corns themselves don't normally become 'infected' which is why he thinks there's a foreign body in there.
We may have to have her knocked out so he can dig around in there ..................... always something, but I'd be interested to hear if others have had something get in UNDER a corn?

o dear MamaBas not nice for your poor girl. I do think they are prone to feet issues due to their sheer exuberance when sprinting, I remember the racing whippets of my childhood had some bad foot injuries at times. I think the trouble is they press down so very hard with their feet when they run flat out it is too easy for them to pick up stab injuries off debris on ground
regarding the musher's wax .. £14 for tiny tiny tin ouch but it arrived last night- I immediately shoved it on her and can see a difference already- cracks in pads look reduced, the dry appearance and feel has gone too. I am suitably impressed. she was slipping a bit on tiled floor after was done but adjusted quickly.

My mother & subsequently myself, have had Whippets since 1963 & never had any with cracked pads or corns. Perhaps we have been lucky, with all the dogs we have owned & bred in this time!!
