Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Day 65 & a hard knock, stage 1 labour

Hello all, I own a 6 yr old bitch who is about to have her first litter (temp 97 panting & restless)..
This morning she decided to jump out of her very high sided whelping box when I was in bed, we noticed really quickly as  we have a camera on her & I have had sleepless nights checking on her via the camera..
I’m so worried that she has hurt the puppies jumping out. She landed on the top of her whelping box sides & has red marks on & between her last two teats

Well, you can't do anything about it now - you can only whelp the litter and see what comes out and hope for the best.

6yo is very old for a first litter though, the received wisdom is to try to have a first litter no older than 4yo.  Otherwise there are increased risks - like a human mum at 41yo having her first baby for example...

To be honest, at day 65 you should be sleeping next to her.  As she is far too old for a first litter I'm concerned that she could have problems self whelping, and I would be taking her to see the vet to get checked out.

It would be kindest to have her spayed afterwards.

She is a very fit dog & I spoke with my vet before considering, she is of good health so he saw no reason why she shouldn’t have one litter.
The top of the whelping box is over 3ft, I have been checking her constantly in person & on the camera, which I have motion & sound sensors on. Hence we knew that she had jumped out, we were on our way downstairs to let her out.

Thank you for your answers.

I have spoken to the vet & he said not to bring her in while she is in her first stage of labour & wait to see how it goes..

I’d also like to mention that the Vizsla society’s code of conduct recommends that they shouldn’t be bred from when they are 8.

I've had first litters from bitches of 5 years of age, very fit and active dogs, first one had a problem no-one could have anticipated, which resulted in a c-section.  Her daughter had a litter with absolutely no problems except she started to struggle towards the end and required a shot of oxytocin to get things going.  Having spoken to other breeders in the past, it appears there can be a range of acceptable ages dependent on breed, for some breeders 5 is the earliest they'd consider a litter, and others it's too late.  I think if your bitch is fit and healthy she should be able to cope fine with a first litter around this sort of age, I hope all goes well for you.

Thank you. The vet is aware that she is in labour & I’m registered with 4 different vets, so hopefully I will have it covered if we run into problems. Thank you for wishing us well.

One thing you will develop is a thick skin, anyone who breeds needs one because no matter how much you try to do right someone will always find fault.

I do actually sleep down next to the whelping box with my girls as they are approaching full term, to try and keep them settled and just to be there, I couldn't be anywhere else tbh.  It's not always the most comfortable of places to be (on the floor in the kitchen) but I can fall asleep on a washing line.

Thank you. Quick update. She self whelped amazingly, it all happened very quickly & was so special to witness & be a part of.
She has 7 healthy pups & I’m getting zero zzz’s but I guess that’s to be expected... I have a double mattress on the floor butted up to the entrance of the whelping box & she has had round the clock constant care. Mum is very clumsy, has trodden on two, kicked one while lying down (I’m constantly rearranging them to avoid this - didn’t happen on my watch!) & nearly squashed them several times (we do have pig rails). She is cleaning them now (only wee), refuses to have anything to do with poop

Congratulations!  This is where friends who are willing to puppy sit come in worth their weight in gold, but they have to be vigilant as it doesn't take long for mum to be clumsy as you've found out.  A double mattress!  Luxury, lol, I had two cushions off the sofa, but I'm not very big thankfully.  They will soon grow and you'll be able to worry a bit less about them.  It may take a couple of days for her to clean up their poop, but once they start then they tend to keep them clean until you wean them.  I did used to pick up what I could with her having so many pups this last litter, just to help out.

> refuses to have anything to do with poop

We had one who was like this and I swear, despite my best efforts, the poor dears spent a lot of their early days bunged up!   I was even sitting them in bowls of warmed water to try to get them to empty.   Or gravity prevailed.   She was a real Prima-donna.   She only had one litter but they were good 'uns.
