My bitch has been on Apoquel for itchy ears . Before mating my bitch I checked with my vet to see if it was safe to do so while on Apoquel and whether it was safe to continue it. He assured me that it was perfectly safe and now I have read that it must not be used in breeding dogs or pregnant or lactating bitches. Has anyone any experience of using Apoquel during pregnancy? I mated her three weeks ago. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Unless your vet has run his own independent, peer-reviewed tests on Apoquel in pregnant bitches, he is talking out of his a*se. I would send him the above link from the manufacturers themselves and see what he has to say for himself. And if your bitch miscarries, absorbs or has any puppies with birth defects, I would again lay this at his door and ask for compensation...

So would I!! All too often a busy vet will just say what comes into his head. He needs to be pulled up on this one.
Hi, I have just joined looking for information around a pregnant bitch taking apoquel. My bitch has been on this for about 6months and it works for her, however she may be pregnant it is currently a week from mating and I haven’t stopped the apoquel. Now wondering if I should stop and I wondered what the outcome was for your bitch in pup? Did she have them? Many thanks if you don’t want to post on here please email me jane.abel@hotmail.co.uk

If u Google aquopel and pregnancy the information sheets say not to be used in pregnant bitches.
I would have a word with your vet about an alternative way to manage her for a while

Why did you breed a bitch that has needed to be on apoquel for 6 months?
Why would I not??? She has itchy skin but isn’t unable to have pups
Thank you for you advice, she has a vet appointment next week so yes I will speak to them xx

The presence of a uterus does not make a good breeding bitch

you realise that allergies are very commonly hereditary?

Only healthy dogs or bitches should be bred from.
If they're on medication their not healthy enough for breeding all your doing is passing on an inherited problem.
My bitch ended up not being pregnant. I did check with my vet again and he advised me to stop apoquel straight away. Never used it again. She has cytopoint injections which I find are better and my vet tells me they are safer.
Allergies are often caused by auto-immune issues, which are hereditary. Besides the fact that Apoquel is a controversial drug even in non-pregnant dogs, known to cause cancer through the effect it has on the dog's immune system in order to address the immune system's response to allergens. Why breed from a dog which needs a carcinogenic drug just to exist comfortably in the world??
