well over the last couple of months rush has lost 4 kgs in weigth he went to the vets and had some blood test done,and a stool sample which had blood in it,the blood test are back by one the result he anaemic and liver emyzmes are high,then we got a phone call saying in the stool they found the parasite GIARDIRA.i read it up on the net about it,one of the treatment can be pancaur the worming med for dogs,all the dogs in the house are wormed every 3 months,bye this treatmant,which they were all wormed on the 1st jan,
so now the whole gang as to be tested,and poss treated,but wispa may in whelp so she cannot be treated,plus human can get it from the dogs too,
i canot belive that the dogs have is beacuse i am hot on cleanisse in the house with the dog bowel and the kennel area,if you read about it on the net the only other way he got is bye our drinking water,puddles,open water area,or faeces from affect aniamls like foxes,ect,

rush has the worse diagree of it at the moment it can go both ways recover or get worse,i just hope he respones to the treatment and the other dogs are ok,is costing alot of pennys,an after the kennel cough in oct what elis can hit me,
if we humans are effected we have to get our water suppley checked.

so be awear of this BIG BUG,

Sorry about Rush - you're lucky to pick up on the Giardia, as it hatches in 'spurts', and is easy to miss if you miss a 'spurt'. I hope your vet has put Rush on antibiotic, as secondary gut infections are common.

The reason I'm such a smart **** about this is that Chris' Jed had it a couple of years ago - flatcoat trait a bit, as they will drink from muddy puddles when out working. Reasonably common, and easy to treat, as your vet says, with Panacur. You can probably quite safely treat Wispa with the usual Panacur after 42 days in whelp - I've had no problems with it in whelp; only in young pups - still don't know why.

Oh Terri, what a blow! But like Jo says & from what I`ve read, it`s fairly common & can be easy to treat. Someones dog on another list I`m on has it. People can also have it & pass it to dogs without knowing as well & I think it can be transfered from birds. Hope Rush gets better soon & the others will be OK :)

I'm sorry to hear that. One of my dogs is prone to Giardia for some reason and infact we had an 'outbreak' in the pups we had hear recently resulting in all the dogs being treated and a pressure wash and steam clean of everything. Don't think of it as anything you have done these things happen. As you have discovered many animals carry it that aren't treated and your dogs could have picked it up from everywhere.

I had a pup with it, panacur wormer is what the vet gave me too, and also the enzymes.which looked like tobacco.Pup made a full recovery, she was only 8 weeks old, i noticed that her motions were snotty and took her straight to the vet.
She had a larger dose of panacur wormer over 5 days rather than 3, and after a few more days she was fine, just took a little while for her to regain her appetite. Hope all goes well for you and Rush :)

Panacur wormer is given at the puppy rate (1/2ml per kg bodyweight, per day) for 3 consecutive days.

I would dose your in whelp bitch from 6 weeks in whelp. The pregnant bitch dosage is 1/4ml per kg (half the daily puppy dose) given every day to two days after whelping.

I have w0ormed bitches in whelp for 7 litters without problems, though did have trouble with one litter of pups when doing them.

I have since 9and previously) wormed pups twice rather than 3 times by 8 weeks,m and had no more problems. I now have 3 generations whose mothers were wormed during their pregnancies.

rush is sitting by the fire at the moment,i looked in his month his gum and tounge are very pale and he feels cold too,but he had a bust day from 3pm to 7pm people coming to vist the dogs to see if they would like a flatcoat,3 different family all fell in love with the lot,i said to them to go home and think about what they are taken on and if this is the breed for them and to ring back in 48 hours,before they all got to the door to home they said please keep us on your list,
well harley acted the clown with he dose all the time,
baby chase melt their hearts,
wispa and brie where modles saying to them please look us we are the best,
and rush was so nobal in his pride,

She's gorgeous!?! Hope you're well Terri. Sorry to hear that Rush has Giardia. I've seen it in humans and it is very unpleasant. I've heard that the Panacur will help the dogs, though. Thinking of you and hoping the dogs shake it off soon!

you said you have seen it in humans,well andrew has not been well for over two year had he gladbladder out in 2oo1.but all the scan and test are ok,he sick all the time dizzess spell,lost weigth,the dr and spec cannot find a thing wrong i wanda now if this could be it,
i know he dose now drink out of paddle or swim in cannal,or eat other faceas,
like dogs,but he could of got it from thr dogs or the drinking supply,
i try to phone some time to have a chat if you are not going to crufts,

vet thought that our puppy dobe had giardia when he was just about 9week old.

he had to have the panucur wormer and the same antibiotic as you, plus one other - cant just think of name, but is a very common one and comes in pink wrapper.

He had the runs for weeks .

In end gave natural bio yoghurt and it was amazing - the runs stopped in couple of days. Don't know if it was just natural progression from the antibiotics or what but it may be worth you giving it a try.

Synolux, or some such name, isn't it? It seems a reasonable basic antibiotic, not too broad a spectrum, but like all antibiotics it will upset the gut flora, so a few days of live yoghurt after the treatment has stopped is beneficial - for people too if you are on a/b's.

The people I know who had giardia got it bad. They felt dreadful, had bad diarrhoea, felt sick and very weak. They didn't feel like eating and were in bed for a few days. Everyone in the household got it eventually, including the relatives who went to stay to look after the children. They all needed antibiotics to get rid of it. Having said that, I think it is possible to have a mild dose without knowing about it and it can go away untreated.

Have fun at Crufts, we won't be there, but will be at the breed show at the end of the month, so will hopefully see you then.
