Topic Dog Boards / Health / Suggestions on wormers
- By Vee [gb] Date 28.01.20 13:32 UTC
Last time I wormed my miniature poodle she came into season that same day. She whined alot for days and became very needy and went off her food. I assumed this was down to being into season.

I wormed her again this week and she's been the same if not worse. Whining and howling at night and whining throughout the day.
This was after using the drontal (bone shaped) I won't be using it again and thought maybe panacur next time?

Has anyone had this experience?
any suggestions on a gentler wormer?

Worm Count and then only worm if needed .if needed I would discuss different wormers with  your vet.

I've not used wormers with my dogs for years, I use natural preventatives in their diet, and there's no signs of any problems.

Whereas I did worm my bitches (usually with Panacur but it was years ago now) before being mated, I only worm puppies (using Sherleys Gentle Wormer from week 2) after which only if I see the need.   One of my current two hounds came to us with Giardia at which point I treated my resident hound for that, once I knew what was going on.

But that's all.

Thanks for the advice all. I'll definitely try worm count and natural preservatives. I've never had this issue with other dogs but it's made me realise maybe I worm them more than necessary.

So don't you worm bitches in pup either? I never liked the amount of wormer advised to give pregnant bitches. I'll look at sherleys for future puppies.

I've looked for products and there so many. Do you have any recommendations?

Nope, I worm pups, but I didn't worm my bitch this time round.  Pups were all fine as well, no sign of any problems.

Nope.  As said, I worm before being mated, which means I shouldn't need to worm whilst pregnant.  Only once, with my first litter, did I not worm before and when I did worm the eventual singleton puppy (she had 2 but one was DOA), he produced a ton of roundworm, to the point I wasn't able to eat spaghetti, for years after.   Subsequent litters, when I'd wormed before mating, I never saw any worms from any puppies after their worming started.

Oh and I should have said I always wormed mum at the same time the puppies had their first dose, at 2 weeks - using something like Panacur.

What do you use Sleeping_Lion?

Thanks for the info I'll definitely calm down on the wormers and maybe try some natural preservatives.

Garlic, turmeric, fenugreek, apple cider vinegar, mint and a few other herbs.

I have had 2 dogs behave like this every time they are wormed.  Whining, restlessness, pacing, manic behaviour or zoomies, looking unhappy - I can only conclude it's some kind of stomach ache caused by the wormer.  They don't have runny poo or vomit.

I do worm about once a year or two, usually on a day I know I'll be around in the evening to be with them.  I do Wormcount in between.

I didn't worm during pregnancy because of this - we didn't have any worms in the pups for either litter from this dog.  I wormed the pups at 3 weeks with Panacur syringe and all seemed fine with the pups, but when I wormed them again at 6wks, it was an entire litter of whining, restless, manic puppies...

Mine seem slightly better on Panacur than on Drontal + - but the active ingredients in Drontal (febantel) get broken down be the same thing as Panacur (fenbendazole) (plus praziquantel), so it isn't a totally different wormer.  I don't think a totally different wormer exists...

I've used Panacur for donkey's years and never had a problem. But I now have a dog that reacts exactly as you describe the couple of times I have used it. I won't use it again on him now, but no idea what to use instead? I may try sleeping_lions suggestions and see if he copes better with 'natural'.

Why do people still promote over use of wormers when 9 times out of 10 their dogs don't have them.

If you're dog has worms you'll see either eggs or worse actual worms from other end.

Yes I do worm my dogs twice yearly and pups when I was breeding from 2 wks to 12 wks with Drontal liquid for pups which is so much fun trying to get that into them, and tablets for big guys and pups after 12wks done until 6 months then twice yearly.

Microscopes do come in handy as long as your not squeamish.

If you look at what CSJ put in their 'Billy no mates' products, and use a mixture of those, plus the extras I mentioned.  I don't like giving lots of chemicals to my dogs, my vets despair of me, but know not to argue because they also know that all my dogs are in good health with no problems, although I had a right do over Christmas/New Year with dogs needing spaying, getting injured and eating stuff they shouldn't.

Thanks for the suggestion Sleeping_Lion. I'll look in to it.

https://www.vetuk.co.uk/dog-supplements-cat-supplements-verm-x-natural-control-of-intestinal-hygiene-c-5_200 this is also a natural wormer containing similar ingredients to those sleeping lion mentions.
https://wormcount.com/  is worth considering as u can check all is well without giving chemicals unless really needed. They are very helpful and can check for lung worm before it becomes a problem

I don't tend to worm unless worms. I did wormcount a pregnant bitch and was all clear but i did use drontal puppy suspension on the litter
