With a very heavy heart, it looks as if my ageing Basset may be developing glaucoma.  I don't see any increased size in his eyeballs (both would appear to be affected) indicating increased pressure, but something is going on.   I had him into my vet this afternoon and he wants me to take him back just before 6 pm when another of the vets will also be on duty.   I think he wants a second opinion.

I know glaucoma can be treated with drops, but I need to know whether I should ask them for a 'script because most things are less expensive if bought online and if this is going to be ongoing treatment, on our now limited budget, every pound counts.

This is yet another thing this boy is throwing at me ....... he's just over 10 now.    Back in August last year, he presented with ulcers in his cornea, both sides and it appeared that he'd responded well to treatment.   Now this!

If he needs drops then the sooner they start the better, when you talk to the vet you will find out if it will be long term.
You can then request a small quantity, firstly to check that there are no problems and also give you time to check prices from various places ( I nearly got caught out with meds recently https://forum.champdogs.co.uk/topic_show.pl?tid=151107 ) before you pay for a script and wait for delivery

Update .   I saw one of the more experienced vets with him yesterday evening and he first checked his tearing, then did the 'green eye' check - no ulcers.   He then checked his eye pressure after giving him a local anaesthetic - NO GLAUCOMA!  He found one eye wasn't as good as the other re tear production.  So I came home with two sets of drops, one a steroid and the other a lubricant and a bill for just over £100.   He was talking about some allergy meaning each eye was reacting to 'something' which probably wasn't there ...........?

I have to take him back on Friday afternoon for him to check his progress.

Thanks for the info. re the need to get ontop of any glaucoma but thankfully, it's not that.

If you saw the notes they have on their system for this hound, you'd die.   Pages and pages of what ails him, over the years.   Not a good buy-in me thinks.
