Hi
Can anyone please recommend what and where to get DNA testing done
Many thanks
- By onetwothreefour Date 28.01.20 21:07 UTC
What sort of DNA testing?  For genetic diseases or for genetic diversity?  For what breed?
- By annie.wood [gb] Date 28.01.20 21:13 UTC
I have a Fox Red Lab and my first time breeding her, so I want to get everything done properly. I keep seeing and reading about DNA testing and wondering which tests are required? Necessary and best places to get them done

Laboklin will do a package of DNA tests. You will need hip and elbow scores, also eye test, look on British veterinary association website for those.

I used Antagene, good thing is they are usually breed specific and you have to have a vet either swab or sample. They scan the microchip number and gets stamp. Vets also get the results too.
Highly recommend them

A CombiBreed KC/Weatherbys dna test package is available for Labradors for £135. See CombiBreed Health Test Packages on the KC site.

As Carole says. CombiBreed is the way to go for Labradors:  https://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/health/for-breeders/dna-testing-simple-inherited-disorders/combibreed-health-test-packages/

I used Petagenics for my Labrador bitch, they do a whole bundle of tests, and were really helpful with getting results through onto the KC database

I used Laboklin and they keep the sample for five years so you can stagger the tests/costs over a period of time and not have to redo the sampling. Which I have to say was quite stressful, not being sure if I’d got enough cells and then leaving it to air dry where it can’t touch anything else!! Results came back very quickly though.

Excellent service from this UK Lab, fast, cheap and KC approved.

Petagenics have closed down.
- By onetwothreefour Date 29.01.20 10:13 UTC Upvotes 1
Petagenics have closed down.  You will find the testing more expensive for Laboklin.  CombiBreed is new, it is run via the KC itself - which is why the link is to the KC website - so there's nothing easier when it comes to getting the results on Mate Select.  And it tests for all recognised diseases (all the diseases the KC will list on Mate Select) for just one fee with one set of swabs.  I've used Laboklin previously and CombiBreed this time and CombiBreed was way easier and cheeaper.

I’ve heard bad reports re Combibree, tests take far too long and communication is almost non existent.
- By onetwothreefour Date 29.01.20 17:09 UTC
Nope, my tests were back in about 2 weeks and it was a piece of cake to do.  I had no need to contact them.
- By Sleeping_Lion Date 29.01.20 17:53 UTC
When did Petagenics close?  Their website is still very much up and running, and I only used them in June 2019.

While DNA tests are important, personally, I would do their eye tests first. It's the cheapest of the tests, and possibly the most likely to fail.
Once you have a pass for her eyes, you can get a combi test via the KC https://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/health/for-breeders/dna-testing-simple-inherited-disorders/CombiBreed-Health-Test-Packages.
After this, you would do hips and elbows.
This is all assuming that she has a great temperament has been proven in the field and you think that breedig from her will better the breed, not just that you fancy breeding "fox red" (yellow) Labradors.
NB I am assuming that the bitch is working lines as it's described as "fox red".

Petagenics no longer have a website are you meaning Petgenetics?
- By Sleeping_Lion Date 30.01.20 07:18 UTC
Yes!  That's what's coming up when I type in petagenics, and it's that one that I used, I blame puppy brain, even though she's six months old now.
- By Taxidriver [gb] Date 30.01.20 14:26 UTC
I used KC Combibreed, from the date of me ordering to the date of me receiving my results was 2 months. It took about 2 weeks for my test kit to arrive, I posted back the same day, communication was really poor, they blamed a problem with their courier. It then took about a further 2 months before my results were added to the KC website. I personally wouldn’t recommend them.

MyDogDNA Panel testing by Genescoper does a whole panel of tests for one price https://www.mydogdna.com/

You are best to check with the breed club whic conditions are breed specific as to which laboratories will cover what you need.

As others have said, do the cheaper tests first, if you get an unsatisfactory result, you won't have wasted so much money.
- By onetwothreefour Date 30.01.20 22:32 UTC
When did you use Combibreed Taxidriver?  Perhaps they had teething problems at the start...
- By annie.wood [gb] Date 31.01.20 14:43 UTC
Eyes are clear, now I'm doing DNA tests. I also have an appointment booked ready for Hips and Elbows!
I do not appreciate your tone, or your telling me that she is "Fox Red!" I know very well they are "yellow!'
She is from working lines but she and some of her siblings have made amazing "pets!' too, she has the most incredible temperament! I am sorry that you obviously have a problem with this?
- By Goldmali Date 31.01.20 15:18 UTC
I've just sent off DNA to MyDogDNA last week, I counted over 200 tests in total in addition to the 3 that were for my breed. It cost more or less the same as only doing the breed ones with Laboklin. It will be very interesting to see how it all turns out. Sadly very few labs do the test I need.
- By Goldmali Date 31.01.20 15:21 UTC
Just adding for interest, the KC have just today announced more breeds added to Combibreed; Giant Schnauzer, Irish Setter, Jack Russell Terrier, Parson Russell Terrier, Shetland Sheepdog, Spanish Water Dog, Standard Poodle and Tibetan Terrier. Takes the total up to 21 but obviously it's still missing many.
- By masajackrussell [gb] Date 31.01.20 16:19 UTC
I didn't know this so had a quick nosey at the JRT price with Combibreed. £135!!! It's £75 for the three tests with AHT. Surprised at such a huge price difference.
- By onetwothreefour Date 31.01.20 17:45 UTC
For some breeds there are 5 tests involved in CombiBreed - which means it works out much cheaper than the AHT....
- By Sleeping_Lion Date 31.01.20 18:17 UTC
With Labradors there are at least five relevant DNA tests
- By masajackrussell [gb] Date 01.02.20 08:11 UTC
Ah I see, Is it £135 for any breed then? Assumed it would differ if there were more or less tests included.
- By Sleeping_Lion Date 01.02.20 12:59 UTC
I honestly couldn't tell you, as I just had the test done for a Labrador, but what I can tell you is that the bundle actually includes about 150 dna tests, and a lot of them are relevant to other breeds, so I'm not sure if it's a one bundle fits all breeds type of test.
- By Sleeping_Lion Date 01.02.20 22:21 UTC
Interesting point re the yellow colour, the UK Breed Standard uses the term Red Fox, it's the US Breed Standard that uses the term Fox Red.  And, although they have a range of shades for yellows, none exists for the brown variety, so there you go!

I ordered Combibreed in August 2019, I found the communication awful, if there’s a delay I would expect them to notify me rather than me to have to chase them. They use different labs for different tests so one of my 3 were back in within a few weeks but the other 2 that were sent to a different lab were apparently delayed by the courier and caused the long delay. Hence why I think some people have had no problems and others have had to wait ages.
- By onetwothreefour Date 03.02.20 10:49 UTC
I ordered CombiBreed in December 2019 and received the test within a week.  I returned it and about 2-3 weeks later, I got my results emailed to me - followed up with a certificate in the post.

I had no need to contact them because everything worked smoothly.  I'd suggest maybe August 2019 is very early on in their existence and perhaps they had teething problems...
- By Taxidriver [gb] Date 03.02.20 11:44 UTC
It may well of been teething problems but that doesn’t excuse their poor communication however I know people who have ordered tests later than me that also had problems. I still found their communication poor. I also know people who ordered their test but different breed at the same time as me who got it back a lot quicker than me. My biggest issue with them is their communication and getting given conflicting information.
