Hi - I’ve just joined my first ever forum at the age of 78, so don’t yet know my way around. I’ve had gun dogs all my life but I shall be looking for advice on my next one - hopefully a Small Munsterlander - in the past I’ve had large Munsterlanders.

> in the past I’ve had large Munsterlanders.

My neighbour had two of these but very different in temperament.   One was totally into hunting - we 'sat' them and out on exercise, the one, younger and from a different kennel/bloodline, reached the edge of the hamlet we lived in and totally switched off.   Eyes everywhere.  To his eventual demise after he took off from his owner, on a very hot day.   She worked in the mornings and exercised her dogs around lunchtime, regardless of the temperature outside.   He was later found in a ditch by a passing rider and brought home where we both worked on bringing his temperature down, to no avail.  He started fitting and eventually I helped her get him into her car and off to the vet.   Despite their every effort, he couldn't be saved.   Very sad.

On the other hand, his older LM companion was really not into any form of 'hunting' - in fact when the local Shoot was around, he'd freak out just as with thunderstorms.   Of the two he was nicer to live with really, but for the same breed, soooo different.

Good luck with the Small Munsterlander - I don't think there are many in the UK?  And welcome here.

Welcome to CD Nicholas.

There are a great variety of members.  Oldies like me, youngsters, and everywhere in between.

Lots of different subjects and lots of different viewpoints.  Enjoy.

Thanks. What a sad story. I’ve had three LMs; first was two years old; second we had from a puppy; third was three years old. The puppy became a wonderful dog; a brilliant natural HPR, she was a joy to train; and a lovely family dog. I’d never buy another mature LM; too late to bond. If you know of any SM pups coming along please let me know. Thanks.

Many thanks for the link. I’ve read that with interest and am now reading through the International KlM literature. Fascinating past and a challenging future for the SM/KLM breed.

Yes, excellent, and it linked me on to the KlM International website. Very informative. Thank you very much.
