Topic Dog Boards / General / Norwegian Buhund Questions

Hi,

Can anyone help with info about the Norwegian Buhund, please?

They seem quite hard to find in the U.K. - is that correct? (I’m in the SW)

If I managed to find a Buhund puppy, what kind of price would I be paying (I’m slightly concerned that their rarity means a high price)

I’d be able to exercise it for an hour to an hour and a half a day and I enjoy walking - but after exercising is the Buhund the kind of dog to be happy lying on the sofa or at my feet while I work (obviously I’m talking about an adult rather than a puppy)?

Finally, any other info I should know? Good points? Bad points?

TIA : )

I think your best bet would be to contact the breed club, Speak to a few breeders and meet with their dogs as well as attending the up coming crufts as they will have a breed stand in the receiver dogs section where you can meet some dogs and owner. I see on the club site there are two breeders planning litters the beginning of this year.

You're correct that they're very hard to find in the UK. Only 21 were registered in the UK in 2018 and the figures for 2019 (not all released yet) look like being much the same. In the past 10 years there have never been more than 45 registered in any year. If you compare that to the 7,000 German Shepherds or 35,000 Labradors registered each year it seems you might have to be on a breeder's waiting list for a long time. It doesn't always follow that rarity is reflected in an inflated price; if people are unaware of a breed the demand is low and therefore prices are usually about average for a pedigree dog.

Thank you both : ) I’ve met a Buhund before but not interrogated any owners

That’s a good point about the price and not being in demand. Hopefully it will be average rather than too high.

Off to email the breed club now.

Please remember that any reputable breeder will interrogate you thoroughly.

And rightly so, JeanSW : )

I have a Buhund as a pet. Your best bet is to contact the Norwegian Buhund Club.
They are a very active working dog and probably need more stimulation than you can offer. They are lovely family dogs but very busy and looking for work all the time. Alert guard dogs they will bark sometimes quite a lot.

Thanks, Louise  I appreciate your honesty about their activity level. That’s really helpful.

My last dog was part Buhund but it’s hard to judge how much her Buhund genes influenced her, and I really want a true picture of what a full Buhund is like. Nothing’s more important than us and our prospective dog suiting each other as perfectly as possible. I want to be sure I choose absolutely correctly.

On facebook there are 2 Buhund groups, buhund Buddies and Norwegian buhund forum. Reading them will give you an indication of the wide range of activities they do.

Oh, brilliant  I’ll definitely look at those. My Buhund cross was energetic (and super-fast!) and would walk as much as I wanted but she also liked to chill inside, especially as she got older. That mix of active and happy to rest if we are is what I’m looking for. We do love long walks (eg 5 or 6 miles) but during the week walks would be shorter so I wouldn’t want to get a dog that that didn’t suit. Seeing what people do with their Buhunds would be very useful.

Thanks again : )

Actually generally no, like my breed the Norwegian Elkhound cousin, breeders breed for the love of the breed and to continue bloodlines and prices are quite reasonable compared to many breeds.

Number of puppies bred annually will be in the 30's, so contact the breed club and ask to go on a breeders waiting list.

Expect to wait, unless your in luck for an unspoken for puppy.

Thank you, Brainless - that sounds promising. I don’t mind waiting as I’m thinking months ahead : )

(I love the Norwegian Elkhound - they’re beautiful dogs.)

Thank you, I'd say the.Elkhounds are more laidback, in common with many hunting breeds compared to herders.
