hiya all.
i took my staffie for a scan today, but proved to be inconclusive.the lady said she couldn't see anything!
my bitch would now be 56 days into whelp, she is still showing all the signs of being pregnant ( teats large + pink- swelling around her tummy, vulva is still extremely large compared to being normal,)
has anyone experianced the same?
surely her vulva would have gone back to normal size now after 8 weeks?
i have read the ''book of the bitch'' inside out, my minds in a twist!!

Hi
Did you take her to a lady in the Tamworth area?
reason I ask is i had someone email for her number....nosey bugger sorry.
If it is the one then to be honest she is very good indeed.
Your bitch could be having a phantom pregnancy,if so then keep your eye on her
for the nesting and milk making.
These dogs do your head in sometimes dont they.

Hi
Dont worry i wasnt moaning.
I know mistakes can happen and when you want your bitch in pup
the bitch wont be.
I did have one of my bitches scanned and was told she wasnt in pup
anyhow knowing the dog as well as i did (or was i being arkward )
I took her to be rescanned 3 times and low and behold
there were pups...only 2 but they were there.
The only other thing you could do is get her x-rayed at the vets..but personally i wouldnt risk it if there is no need.

hiya carolyn.
just thought i would let you know and ask for your trusted advise!
my staffy would now be 58 days gone, but after having her scanned by ann( and seeing nothing on the scan).i've now accepted that it must be a phantom!!!!
BUT after returning from training tonight (thur), i have noticed that my dog is paying her more attention than normal. she seems to be losing a clear discharge!!
any advise?
mark
If your bitch is 58 days in whelp and loosing a clear sticky jelly like discharge I would say scan or no scan she is will have puppies.
Mine usually start to loose that sort of discharge up to 2 days before whelping, so get yourself and equipment ready, plus watch her like a hawk.
I recommend the temperature taking as being the best way to know when a bitch is about to start in labour.
Best of Luck.
Jayne

Hi Mark
I really dont know what to say
I really dont think if she was having a phantom it would go
so far has having the discharge.
Get everything ready for her to have a litter then
at least if she does produce your ready.
The discharge it isnt smelly or off colour is it?
Take er temp at least twice a day and try to stick to roughly the same times
taking it.
I know you want this madam to have pups...so best of luck :)

Maybe if the scan showed nothing this late on I would be doubtful any pups as Ann is very good.
If I were Mark I would take the bitch to the vets regarding the discharge as could be an infection, also if having a phantom there could be a risk of pyometria :-(
Our Bordeaux bitch had a phantom, produced milk, started digging AND even slight panting, though no real weight gain. She too had a sligt discharge which turned out to be a slight infection which soon cleared with anti-biotics.
Best be safe and get her checked for infection, while there could always ask vet to have a feel. If milk does come in and is reluctant to "dry up" then the bitch may need something from the vet to assist.

Dont be too down over this, I had my gsd scannes at 4wks which the vet said was inconclusive, the said to re-scan in a week.. the result no nothing she must have missed. After a 4 hour drive each way to the stud dog (twice) i was very dissapointed. a week later i returned to the vet , i was sure she was in whelp, her behaviour etc. this time they did it the old fasioned way with hands on and guess what.. she is. she is now day 53 has a lovely big tummy covered with wine corks and theres something moving in there. Although scanning is or can be very good , dont put all your eggs in one basket, Dogs have a habbit of surprising you. My girl is absolutely lovely and has won many of her classes and 5 x bob, she has a low hip score and a lovely german imported fella, were all looking forward to these babies.

we took our girl for a scan in november. she would have been around 30 days. the vet said he could see something...but wasnt sure. we took her back the following week and there was nothing. she also had enlarged nipples and a swollen vulva. we are trying again in april....hope for better luck this time !!.
We have a bitch who's 54 days now and is showing all the signs except for swollen abdomen, raised pink teats loss of appetite early on and absolutely starving now.Personally I think it's a phantom as she's now started collecting small toys to nurse. I had her scanned at 5 weeks and it was inconclusive but decided not to have the second scan as it's really a long way to travel and she's very nervy in the car.

My Terv bitch, was taken to the vet at 5 weeks. She had gotten huge, and was so big she could not sit or lie down. She ended up being full of food. They took and x-ray and told us that she wasn't pregnant (she had been mated earlier). We were obviously disappointed :( But when she was to be 8 weeks, we decided to take her into out normal vet (before had been emergency one) And he told us she was. So we only had a few days to prepare! What a hectice week that was. She gave birth to 6 beautiful babes.
Good luck!
