Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Puppies have rash on tummy

Can anyone shed any light on this ?
I have a litter of 5week old puppies that are all well and healthy. I noticed a couple of weeks ago that the boys had a small cluster of spots around the region where the umbilical cord was. Thought it was urine burning their skin because the girls didn't have it. Three weeks on and one boy has no rash whereas the others seem to be healing but the area is rather bumpy and where the spots are the skin is white. There is no heat or redness and it doesn't bother them at all. One of the girls has just a couple of spots again which have dried and de-pigmented.I don't think it too much of a problem, had thought of it as a sort of milk/nappy rash...but I could be wrong ???
Any ideas or has anyone experienced similar.

Thanks
Mich

What kind of bedding are they on. The reason I ask is that I understand this was quite common before the widespread use of Polyester veterinary bedding in whelping boxes and for pups to sleep on.

This kind of bedding ensures trhat the pups are alwasy dry, as urine and dampness pass through to absorbent material like newspaper underneath.

It does sound like so called Milk rash, which is in fact a kind of nappy rash.

I was thinking along the same lines Brainless, about wet newspaper and the printers ink, reacting on the puppies tummies and bringing them out in allergic reaction rash :-)

Would you be able to suggest anything other than newspaper. I wasn't keen on wood shavings because they would probably eat it.

Hi Mich, can`t help with rash, but several yrs ago I bought rolls of paper specially for whelping & pups. It`s white & sort of waxed backed & I got it from an ad out of Dog World. I used it for the whelping instead of newspaper & then when pups where older I put it down outside the whelping box for them. It comes in 2 sizes, a full roll & half roll.

They are out of the whelping box and have three large pieces of vet bed in their sleeping quarters, and newspaper in the play area. I keep thenewspaper as dry as is possible. At three weeks when I first noticed the rash they were on vet bed in the whelping box.

I`ve had this once a very long time ago, according to the vet at the time had nothing to do with environment but more to do with the puppies immune systems which haven`t fully kicked in, sorry I can`t be more exact but the old brain cells are not what they were!

thanks for your reply. Do you remeber whether or not any treatment was required or did it just clear up in time ?

Hi there Jo here!

Just found this in vet notes for dog owners
Quote
'Impetigo is a mild transient disease of puppies affecting the skin of the axillae, abdomen and groin, especially round the penis or vulva. The lesions are small pustules or 'white heads'. Treatment with antibacterial shampoo will bring about a rapid resolution in most cases, but the advice of your vet should be sought' End quote

Knowing what you think of your vet, I leave the last bit up to you!!!! Looking forward to seeing them soon

No treatment was given but the vet said to keep the area clean and swab with a mild antiseptic to avoid any secondry infection
