Hi so I have a larger breed that was mated 1 day and 3 days after ovulation (by progesterone result). Had 2 good matings although first one did resist 2nd was text book.
Shes now 2 days + from ovulation . 1 day + first mating.. (Today being her absolute most fertile day 9 weeks ago)
Shes incredibly well so happy and calm. After her temp dropped on 29th I thought would get her reverse progesterone tested to see if could leave her over the new year or not however it suggested was imminent result was 12.5nmol (labour starts at 6.36 ish) so very close - vet suggested would start overnight and if not would require c section
I can feel pups moving but she is extremely big (pups moving high in ribs)
Last night she bested little bits and shivered odd times but nothing much more than that.
Called the vet re leaving her or section he said my call and I absolutely have no idea what to do for the best.
If her progesterone is too low wont she lose the pups, how quickly does the level drop? Do we sit it out do we opt for section hes freaked me out saying need to consent to blood transfusion as she could bleed heavily

With the 'Sections we needed, I let them go two days over from the first mating and then involved my vet and with her agreement re what the situation was, had the 'Sections done.    I would just say that most of those I had to have operated on had started but not progressed to full labour.  In other words they had secondary inertia.   With mine it was very much the 'ouch' mum thing = give up.

Had the situation not been secondary inertia, I'd have waited although with each extra day, the puppies would be that much bigger which probably would end up needing to have a 'Section done.  So I suppose 'your call' was a comment he might have been expected to make?

I never did the kind of testing people do these days (reverse progesterone).

We'd need to know the exact progesterone results and dates etc....

Having found blood testing to be totally useless at determining when to mate, I personally wouldn't place much faith in it to determine whelping! Have you been taking her temperature regularly for the past few days? I find the temperature drop to be very reliable.

First temperature drop was the 29th but only stayed down about 6 hrs so 30th morning was 37.7. 30th night dropped to 36.9 and has stated down ever since currently 36.7

Going by that I would expect labour to be well underway within 24 hours.

Not the levels now, the levels when you bred. 

Canine gestation is pretty precise if we know the date the bitch ovulated.  If you don't know that, it's a crap shoot.

Ok the levels at the start were irrelevant to be honest. It was the whelping progesterone I was querying! As stated we knew she was overdue on the pre mating levels.

So we had 10 pups

1 angel never took a breath
8amaxing puppies was whelped easily
1 little bugger didnt want to drop and stayed high in the rib cage so she was born by c section but foing amazing now almost 1 week old

How often have I heard of this situation - all goes well and then the poor bitch needs a C.Section for the final puppy!    Still with 9 puppies, you should recoup your losses provided there are no further complications!!
