Topic Dog Boards / General / Human Equivalent of Your Dog's Age? Here's a New Formula.
- By Admin (Administrator) Date 26.11.19 12:18 UTC
"No one knows how it started, or where it came from, but the idea that you can convert your dog's age to human years by multiplying by seven? Total myth. But we like to contextualise our animal companions' ageing against our own lives; if nothing else, it helps us to relate to them. Finding an accurate way to do so isn't easy, but a team of researchers has developed a formula. And it's based not on some arbitrary metric, but on changes to DNA over time.

Dog lifespans can vary wildly: from 6-7 years for some large breeds such as mastiffs to as many as 17-18 years for dogs such as chihuahuas. Despite this variation, all dogs exhibit a similar developmental, physiological, and pathological trajectory."

Think you need to be Sheldon Cooper to understand it properly.

Think you are right! I clicked on the ‘calculator’ and couldn’t make head or tail of it!!

Got it ! My dog is 9 .put that in the log calculator and get result. Copy into another ordinary calculator x 16 + 31. Her human years are 66 rounded down

Yes. If I have it right my 11.5 yo male has a human equivalent age of 70, and my 10.5 yo female is 68.6.
On the previous veterinary calculator, (which does make allowance for different bodyweights), they would be 67 and 62 years respectively.

Still doesn't make sense to me as I got just 76 for my oldest dog -she's 17 so really old (especially for a large dog).

I’ve tried it. My almost 8yr old is 64, the 5yr old is 56, the 4yr old is 53 and the 2yr old is 42. In old money, taking into account the months past their last birthday, they’d be 55, 38, 29 and 16. These ages ‘feel’ a better fit to me but maybe you can’t teach an old ‘dog’ new tricks!!

Do you see what I mean about mine? She's half Golden Retriever and Golden sized, yet at 17 (and a half) according to this she's not even twice as old as your 2 year old. Or have I missed something again lol. Also thinking about it, if we're comparing to humans, a 42 year old would start having lower fertility (female) but a 2 year old dog would be having years of peak fertility yet.

Hells bells - I never was good at maths so for me, my Whippet is 11 (last October), and my Basset 10 (again last October).   And that does it for me!  I know how old most of my Bassets were over the years - around their 13th year.   And that Whippets tend to live longer......

I do see. I’m not convinced by the new calculation at all. Not saying the 7:1 system is better but I think it is closer. My youngest does behave like a flirty teenager at times! My oldest is very fit, but I can’t imagine she’ll get to 17, your girl is doing brilliantly! I’ve only heard of one full golden getting to 17 and a couple around 14/15 for the majority life expectancy is about 12.

Two of sister in laws full goldies got to 16 and one to 14. Current btch is 12.5 and a bit creaky but doing well . Pretty good but I think the average very sadly is dropping

With my own medium Breed I finds that I GIVE THE FIRST TWO YEARS AS 20 HUMAN YEARS, THEN EACH YEAR EQUALS FIVE HUMAN YEARS.

THIS TALLIES BETTER WITYH THEIR REPRODUCTIVE YEARS WITH A 2 TO 3 YEAR OLD BEING 20 - 25, A 7 YEAR OLD HAVING A LAST LITTER WOULD BE 45.

My 4 1/2 year old would be a 30 something, my 11 1/2 year old 67, and the 13 year old 75.

My Flinti -full Golden and full male is 14 years and 5 months. He is still a handsome lad with all his faculties and still drags me to the park. He needs help getting in and out of the car, which is quite high, and doesn't manage the hours of walking the collies enjoy.

I'm hoping to have a lot more time with him.

My last two goldens lived until 14 and 14 1/2. The last one was active until her last month despite being treated for pre kidney failure as well as a heart issue. She was always very lively when out on a walk and I was often asked if she was still a puppy

My Bruno is 14 now. I have long said that comparison between human and dog years should be calculated per breed, and it’s normal life expectancy. This is the only thing that makes any kind of sense.
