Hello again
Just wondered whether anyone could recommend any good training books - preferably something relatively easy to get hold of, ie through Amazon. I'm getting a dobe puppy this summer, and have a read a couple of (American) dobe-specific books (didn't find them very helpful to be honest), plus Gwen Bailey's The Perfect Puppy, which I thought was excellent. Just wondered whether there were any other training manuals in circulation (for either pups or full grown dogs) which people would recommend - or perhaps training manuals for competitive work.
Thanks
Jo
I am very keen on a book called "Purely Positive Training" by Sheila Booth. It may well suit you, as apart from being very experienced (trains schutzhund, agility, etc) the book is described as a "Companion to Competition". It talks about pup development and training, with competition in mind, but also the total relationship, and has photos, then goes on to talk training and how and why, and also breaks a subject such as for example the "Sit" or the "Stay" into how ot use it for schutzhund, agility, obedience, etc. I've learnt a lot from it :)
I would also recommend John Fisher's "Why does my dog?" as a general book to get to grips a bit with how dogs may see things. If you go to www.crosskeysbooks.com, you will find a plethora of training books, including clicker training and other techniques.
Have fun looking :)
