Topic Dog Boards / General / Puppy socialisation

Hello,

I’m picking my pup up on 30 November, the day after her second jab.

I’m keen to start socialisation straight away, carrying her around etc.

However, we are told she can’t be put down in public until 1
Week after her second jab. What about if she’s in my arms and I think she needs the loo? How do people deal with that?

Thank you.

I get mine out after 1st vaccine tbh. Sat in trolleys around garden centres. Quiet villages. I do put mine down in low volume dog areas. Its a risk im willing to take.

i carried mine in a puppy carry bag as had about 3 weeks before she could go on the ground.   I did not take her out for hours, I'd wait until she had just toileted then we would go out for 15-20 minutes .  in my pocket i had a puppy toilet pad so if really had to put her down she could stand on that.
short frequent outings are i think more useful then exhausting long ones where pup would get bored and short means less chance of accident.

We have always kept large dogs, so the option to carry them about becomes impossible quite quickly. We have just used common sense and crossed fingers! Start by really thinking about where you are taking your puppy, for how long and what they are likely to encounter if you need to put them down. Ideally, you don't want to be putting them on the ground in say, the local dog-rich park. Do you have relatives with gardens or a local garden centre that would be happy for you to walk around? If you feel your puppy needs to go and you really have no choice, then you will need to put it down. Try to minimise the time and distance it travels when it is actually on the ground. If it is busting, then it should not need to sniff about and should just go. Socialising is so important that some risks may need to be taken. Just use a bit of common sense and most of all .. enjoy your puppy

I agree with suejaw and did much the same .the risk is small imo especially if u are putting them down in areas in the number of dogs using the area is limited.

Like Suekaw I take mine out straight after their 1st jag, in a buggy nowadays but I used to carry them. I do let them down on the ground to toilet. For me the benefits of socialisation outweigh the risk of illness.

With our last Basset pup years back, we used to carry him between us in an adapted sports bag.

Can't you wait?   What's the big rush...... it's only an extra week after the second jab (UK) and for me, it's far better to wait the extra week than risk the puppy being put down where there is infection lurking.   A puppy with a strong temperament won't suffer from not being socialised immediately.  If you must have him out, take him in the back of the car where you can have him on suitable bedding in case he has an accident?  I happen to think too much is being made of all this 'socialisation' in terms of seeing other dogs.   Mine, who did live within 'a pack', didn't go anywhere until they'd at least finished their puppy vaccination.

I also put mine down from a week after 1st vaccine.

I would avoid parks, popular dog walking locations and pavements in urban areas - but other locations should be just fine and are relatively low risk.

There is a risk to not socialising your puppy:  Way more dogs are PTS for behavioural problems than the weeny number that catch one of the very few diseases we vaccinate against...

I have always socialized mine as soon as puppy is brought home. I don't vaccinate mine until 16wks so have always taken them out the front of my house to get used to traffic( we are on a bus route). I also have a dog pram if I want to go further a field near school and near busier places. I will be getting my new pup next Sunday. I've never had any problems with my way with my other dogs.

This.

My last pup was out after her first vacc too, because I got her at 11 weeks and she'd had zero socialisation up to that point, and behavioural issues were already beginning.  I had to get started to head them off and sharpish.
