I am new to the forum and was hoping I could glean some experiences of the use of Alizin when pregnancy is confirmed. I have a border terrier that had an accidental *unbeknown to me* mating at the end of July while stayingh with a friend when I was abroad. It was only towards the end of August I became suspicious and the vet confirmed she was around 28 days pregnant with six pups. The bitch is too young to have a litter and so we decided to go ahead with the Alizin injections two given 24 hours apart. The bitch suffered no ill effects and apart from a slight mucus discharge she seemed well in herself. She would now be six weeks pregnant and since a couple of weeks ago she has milk leakage and she is looking much fuller now what I wondered was whether or not Alizin can cause symptoms similar to a fasle pregnancy? I saw this reported somewhere but not from peoples experience so I guess I am wondering what folks experiences of this are. I have a vets appointment on Thursday to get her scanned again however on here it seems Alizin has mixed results. Im hoping it’s a phantom not the unwanted pregnancy. My vet never let me know that it wasn’t 100 percent successful so I just assumed it was a given it would work. Does the fact that she had a big litter in her mean the injection is less likely to work? I am beside myself we never intended for this to happen and certainly will be spaying the bitch on her next season is was a genuine accident however any experiences particularly given later would be welcomed.

Alizin isn't 100% guaranteed: the
datasheet says; "In bitches confirmed pregnant, a partial abortion was observed in 5% of cases in field trials. A thorough clinical examination is always recommended in order to confirm that the uterus content is fully evacuated. Ideally, the examination should be conducted using ultrasound. This examination should be performed 10 days after treatment and at least 30 days after mating."
The ultrasound on Thursday (quick, non-invasive and inexpensive) will confirm whether she's empty or still pregnant. Good luck!
Yes, what JG says. Let us know what the vet finds - hopefully it's just a false pregnancy.
Just to add, the datasheet also says:
"In bitches treated after 20 days of gestation, abortion is accompanied by the physiological signs of parturition: fetal expulsion, vaginal discharge, reduced appetite, restlessness and mammary congestion."
If you gave it to her at 28 days and noticed nothing but some mucous coming out, it would suggest to me that perhaps it didn't work...
Many thanks. With regards the mucus, my vet told me to expect this and that in most cases even at 30 days a bitch is likely to reabsorb so now I am worried with the suggestion that its more likely she's still pregnant because I only saw brown discharge.
Has anybody had direct experience of the drug, what day was the female and did it work. More specifically what were the after effects ie did you experience similar to pregnancy (or more correctly a false pregnancy) did they continue to gain weight or grow boobs post jab or did all previous signs dissipate?

I had a Yorkshire Terrier that I had no intention of mating (she had patella luxation, so no way would you want to pass that on.) She was accidentally mated, but I actually caught them, so was able to get the Alizin treatment 2 days later. Would have recommended it to anyone. No side affects, no phantom, and I was able to have her spayed after her next season. So, for anyone who is aware that their bitch has been mated - go for it. I'm just sorry for you that you didn't find out until so late. I wish you all the best for your girl.
Thanks for that.
Its good to hear different experiences and I know the earlier used the better. I was just keen to find out if anybody has used it so late on and what the experince was like as I cant really find much online other than the leaflets and product info
>I actually caught them, so was able to get the Alizin treatment 2 days later.
The datasheet actually says it's more effective if you wait until the end of estrus, rather than doing it during estrus.

I know of two bitches who's owners have used it. One was done right when season finished no pups, the other was further along with a bigger litter. That one went on to have one stillborn.

Vets often recommend waiting till the bitch is past her season in case a subsequent accidental mating occurs, because the course of two injections can only be given once for that season.
Yes, I have used it when my bitch was 38/40 days. She passed a very small foetus about 6 days later, scan 4 days after that confirmed she was empty, initial ultrasound only saw 1 puppy so I knew that was it. Good luck, hope things turn out ok.
