You should get a few weeks free insurance from the breeder which u may choose to.contiue when it expires but my own favourite  after many years of dogs and cats and using other companies. Some good some not so is petplan .
Everyone will have their own favourite or hated company but overall make sure it's a lifetime policy .

My late brother in law used More Than and he always did a load of research.   If you are buying from a reputable Basset breeder, the puppy should come with insurance (Pet Plan?) for, I think, 6 weeks - may only be 4.    You don't have to continue with that company.   You may find it's not very 'cheap' for the breed - when we were down to one Basset (and one Whippet) I took quotes.   I wasn't asking to buy the companies!   In the end I decided to save with my own Bank.........  On reflection that may not have been a smart move, considering how much this Basset has cost me since the 4 months he was when I bought him.....

I like Direct Line.  I find the cover as good as Pet Plan and they pay up every time without quibbling, but it is much cheaper.

If your getting insurance I'd always advise a lifetime policy as this will then cover on going problems each year up to your claim amount as long as you have the policy. My policy I get £4000 per condition per year so this means now I have claimed for incontinence for my girl her meds will be covered each year up to that amount for every year I have the policy.
Other types of policy include max benefit which is where you have a set amount you can claim, once you hit that limit you can't claim again. Seems normally two limits one per condition and one bigger total claims. So for example if I had that for my girl once her meds reached the max claim limit I'd then not be able to claim for them anymore and would then have to buy them myself.
Also Time limited, this is where u can can claim for a condition only for a set time period. So again using my girl as an example if I had this and say the limit was a year I'd be able to claim her meds for one year than after that couldn't claim for it again.

Lifetime polices do cost more than max benefit and time limited ones as they cover your dog for longer when it comes to reacouring conditions but in my opinion it's worth the extra cost.

I know some people have had issues with them but my two are with animal friends and I have found them good enough when I've made my two claims.

Also have chat with these people https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=vip4u&ie=&oe=  Ive an dmany others I know of have found them useful. Not for all I know but worth a chat so you can ask questions and understand what you are needing to fit your situation.

My lot had become tricky to insure for various health reasons and we managed to come up with something that works for us , I don't usually use brokers   but have now . Its amazing what you learn about the different companies and why some appear cheaper than others .

I had no problem with animal friends and would have recommended them  until the animals  were over 8 . Then I discovered the way the co payments work at that point and how the claims were then worked out put the policyholder , at a great disadvantage. Agreed by the ombudsman who upheld my complaint  . That was when I departed elsewhere

Just in case anyone is looking for 3rd Party Public Liability insurance (not health care cover) then the Dogs Trust membership covers this. Details HERE
