Hi

I thought the Bassett Hound came in Dapple?

Also can a kind Knowledgeable breeder/keeper list ALL variants of the colours. When I search I just seem to get that they come in either self, tri or two colour ways. I am wanting what are the actual colour names please

Thank you for listening

Nick

Certainly does not come in dapple!! It would not be full pedigree if you see one advertised!!

The Basset Blue De Gascogne is probably what your thinking of their lovely dogs.

I think the OP might mean mottle.

So when was, 'any recognised hound colour', deleted from the standard?

The Basset does not come in 'dapple'.   It's NOT a 'recognised hound colour'.   The technical term for what is often attractively seen in the breed is 'ticking'.

From the UK KC Breed Standard -

"Colour

Generally black, white and tan (tri-colour); lemon and white (bi-colour); but any recognised hound colour acceptable."

In fact the range of marking in the Basset is wide (just as with other hound breeds) - from the basic saddle tri, to an open tri (where there's a lot of white), to a blanket tri (where there's not much white other than legs and underneath) to the dark tricolour (which usually has tan eyebrows).   The lemon and white is comparatively unseen today.  These hounds are born almost white with dark splodges which as they mature, develop a light tan colour - they fade to white when old.  More often seen today is the red/white or orange and white.   There are hounds with 'ticking', either black or tan.  There is also now the mahogany, linked genetically with the tricolour and coming into the country from Australia/America.   The colour is thought to come from the Russian Basset originally.

But for registration with the KC, as above.

The Blue de Gascogne is heavily ticked which gives a blue-ish look.

The link given here to the American Basset does give an overview of the variety of colours this breed comes in.

I'm not sure what the link below is about because the colours mentioned ARE recognised for registration ...... I took the Breed Records (KCSB) until recently and these colours ARE listed.  There was a period a while ago when we were seeing off colours registered - blenheim and sable!!  We jumped on that and it was corrected.

(Bassets since 1972, mainly tricolour of various markings + just a couple of true lemon/whites over the years)
