Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / mid or standard microchips?
- By onetwothreefour Date 09.09.19 11:29 UTC
Does anyone else chip their own litters?  I am not sure whether to go with the new Peddymark 'Mid' sized chips or the conventional Standard sized.  (Last time I bred a litter, the Mid-sized didn't exist.)

They claim that the mid-sized are the same diameter as the Mini, so are as comfortable as those for pups - whilst having a similar range as the Standard.  So are the best of both worlds.

Anyone have any thoughts?  Brainless/Barbara, I know from searching past threads that you chip your own litters and did the Peddymark training...  Are you using Mid or Standard chips?  Thanks!

Edited to add:  This is for large breed puppies.

After having to chip the male pup in my most recent litter three times (both standard chips managed to work their way out through the hole that the needle and chip made) I ended up using the mini chips..

Gosh, really?!  Was that all in one chipping session or did you chip and then discover the chip had come out at some later point?

It happened to me once when I was chipping the last litter with Standard chips - I chipped and then immediately found the chip outside in the fur, or perhaps it was partially out - but I just assumed I'd made a mistake and hadn't inserted the needle fully into the skin.  I still felt awful that I had to chip the pup again

What microchips do vets use??  Is it something about the Peddymark chips do you think?  Sometimes I think I should just get the vet out to do it even though I've done the Peddymark training.

The MID chips use the same diameter as the MINI apparently, but they have a better read-range than the mini...

Years ago I regularly had chips fall out of kittens. Never puppies. I trained with Pet Detect, have used Peddymark chips as well. Pet Detect told me it could be the fault of the gun and they sent me a new one. I've not had a chip fall out since. I had problems with the all in ones from Peddymark (syringe and chip) and stopped using them and only use the gun.

Vets tend to use Bayer Tracer, which are only sold to vets. Or they were - the info I can find now seems a bit fuzzy and they are sold on ebay for instance.

I use the mini chips - not had a problem, yet!
