Topic Dog Boards / Health / Constantly breaking wind!!

A week we were lucky enough to bring home a rescued sheltie, Grace.  She is about 8 or so with no known background but is very sweet natured.  She gets on well with our other 2 dogs (not so good with my 2 cats!!).  She has been checked over by the vet as she had a few issues.  One was scratching and scooting.  He emptied her anal glands so the scooting has stopped but as she was still biting and scratching a lot and was quite red and sore underneath (no fleas) he has put her on a course of mild steroids for 8 days.  This has improved the itchiness but now poor Grace is constantly breaking wind!!  She seems well and lively in herself though.

Food wise when we collected her we were given the kibble which she was given in the rescue kennels. She was a a bit underweight so she has been getting 3 small meals a day.  I did start to mix in a small amount of cooked chicken to make it  more palatable but have stopped that as I wondered if that was causing the flatulence.  Has anyone any ideas?  She is a greedy little dog (my last sheltie was too) so she wolfs everything down double quick.

Any ideas anyone?  Having used up the kibble she was given she is on one by James Well Beloved, fish and rice.

Thanks

How long has she been on the JWB ?
I suppose you have to let the previous kibble get out of her system before you work out if it's a food intolerance or a permanent problem.
Maybe some plain yogurt to put some good bugs into her tummy ?

Daughters Rott got BAD wind if she had any food with Sugarbeet pulp, you did NOT follow her up the stairs without a gas mask. Fun dog show - sat in car in middle of a storm with torrential rain - with the windows open and umbrellas out of the window to stop rain coming in - either that or get gassed.
She didn't stay on that food for very long

The plain yogurt might be worth a try,  thank you.

Make sure it's a live  natural yoghurt or u can give kefir .the natural one as it has even more healthy bacteria

My greedy little sheltie does not have a wind problem but was inclined to get far too fat. I changed to a good complete raw food. 60gm per day in 2 meals. Gets a bone to chew on 2 or 3 times a week.

I don't remember it making mine gassy (but they weren't on their fish and rice) but it was too 'powdery' for mine and I stopped using that.   Usually it's cereal based food that tends to make dogs gassy - something I have to be very careful about as mine is a breed prone to GDV (Bloat).   Remember rice is a cereal.   You might look for a fish and potato food instead.   I use Arden Grange's Sensitive, or sometimes their Salmon and Rice which is slightly less expensive.

If she's gulping her food down, try using one of the slow-down dishes?
