Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Day 63
- By Gsd-lady Date 18.06.19 11:54 UTC
Hi, this is my first post, today is my girls on day 63, I had her scanned on day 55 as she wasn’t putting on much weight but showing all the signs of being pregnant. The scan showed no puppies that we could see.
She still showed signs so had her rescanned day 60 which showed one pup.
Day 61-62 panting but today  day 63 it’s stopped!! I’m sat writing this waiting for my lift to the vets to have her checked over, I’m so worried for her.
Has anybody else had similar experiences?

It's common for a single pup to not set off labour properly and the bitch then needing a caesarian. Don't let your vet tell you that you should wait for a few more days. In my breed I know of 4 different bitches that were pregnant with a single pup and all were left too late so the pup sadly died and the bitch still needed a section to get it out. Hope it all works out for you, please let us know.

Ok thankyou for replying.
I have had one Singleton a good few years back now,I didn’t even know she was pregnant.it was a two second slip mating when they got together accidentally! He literally jumped up and got down as I shouted him.
That dog didn’t need a c-section thankfully,I thought she was unwell as she was shaking so popped over to the vet to find one pup. my vet booked her in the following day but whepled the morning she was booked,so from that experience I’m confident he will do a c-section
Of course I will let you know, I’m there between 2/3 pm.

So back from the vets and no puppies

How reliable are scans??
I’m so confused right now,the vet said she is not pregnant and never was but yet when the lady showed me the screen on the second scan it actually looked like a outline of a pup
I have just told the lady what the vet told me and she Thinks it was reabsorbed.
on the first scan all we saw was loads of gas
On second what looked like a pup
Last scan nothing but gas again.

I just don’t know now lol, do I treat her like she’s definitely not now? Is it safe to leave her on her own?

Just to note first two scans were done by a lady that came to our home and last was done by the vet*

I’d ask for an X-ray rather than a scan
- By Gsd-lady Date 18.06.19 19:11 UTC
I was going to ask him tbh but every time I asked a question about the second scan or asked any questions he would cut me off with.. she’s not pregnant and never was or he’s being doing scans for 30 years and was never wrong
- By onetwothreefour Date 18.06.19 20:20 UTC
Who did the scans before, on day 55 and 60?  Was it this vet?  Or a scanner?  If he's saying he's never wrong and he did the day 60 scan, he's wrong sometime - either now or then

If you're not happy with the service you're getting, then go to another vet practice.  Whereabouts are you, someone else on here might be able to recommend a good vet with repro knowledge?
- By Gsd-lady Date 18.06.19 20:26 UTC
First two scans day 55 and day 60 were done by a mobile scanner, todays scan would of been day 63 which was done by my vet.
I’m in York.

How reputable or experienced is the mobile scanner - I mean, do you know of other breeders who use them?  Or have you used them before?

Did you see this thread?  Not sure how far any of them are for you... https://forum.champdogs.co.uk/topic_show.pl?tid=150451

She was recommended by a friend, she is a breeder herself and has many happy customers on her page.

I think you have to decide either to wait it out or to go find another vet who will x-ray.  Have you tried chatting with the scanner again and telling her that your vet says there definitely isn't anything there?
- By Gsd-lady Date 19.06.19 10:15 UTC
Yes I am thinking of changing vets.
I spoke to her and told her after the vet appointment but she seemed to think it was definitely a pup and I must admit it certainly looked like one from what I saw but I’m no expert on scans.
She said it may of been absorbed, but the day 60 on second scan I’m unsure this is possible at that stage, wouldn’t it be aborted at this point? Unless I have my dates wrong.
I was going by my first tie April 16th.
1st tie April 16th
2nd tie 18th
3rd tie 20th
Just suppose when she caught on? If she did at all?

Are there any other signs of pregancy? If its her first litter then ... compared to what they looked like before mating...her nipples will be raised and if theyre pink...pinker. Vulva usually remains larger than pre mating. I'd take her temp night and morning and watch for a drop.
- By Gsd-lady Date 19.06.19 10:29 UTC
She has put a small amount of weight on but not much, her nipples are bigger/pink, vulva still puffy.she has just started getting milk in last couple of days along with going to to her chosen place and refusing to leave. Started showing teeth to the male but fine with her mother.
- By Gsd-lady Date 19.06.19 10:31 UTC
I have tryed on many occasions to take her temp, only successfully done it once as she freaks out

If she had a pup on day 60, I don't think she could have absorbed it with no sign by day 63 - the bones would have calcified by then, so the only way to get rid of it would be to abort/miscarry it.  If the pup dies inside this late, or dies due to not being whelped on time, then she will whelp a still born pup.

I think you need to call around a few vets and explain the situation and find one prepared to x-ray.  Surely any vet told that a scanner saw a pup on day 60 and another scan didn't find one on day 63, will be prepared to offer you an x-ray to check...

Ok thankyou

We had a similar size breed dog years ago . She whelped at home four live three dead . Took her to vet just to check she was empty , vet scanned and said she was empty . Jagged with oxytocin just in case . Scanned again just to be sure , said he was 100% sure she was empty . Bitch delivered a dead puppy the next day . Not trying to scare you . But definitely X-ray xx

What would a pup look like at around day 60 on a scan?
It was actually the scanner that wanted to rescan as I had told her I found my dropper (curiosity, I didn’t even know if they work)had a listen and was picking up two heartbeats in the same locations each time.
When she came she looked where I told her and said oh my god a pup, she did say she couldn’t get a very good picture as my girl wouldn’t stand and kept trying to sit down.
Saw the bladder then this looked like a smaller bladder with a pup shape in it.looked where I was getting the other heartbeat nr her ribs but couldn’t see anything.
She’s since said it had a lot of white around it so didn’t look to good anyway.

Just to answer your question when I told my vet about the scanner and the pup we saw he told me not to believe anything for them as they are not qualified, then dismissed any talk about the previous scans
- By Dunveochgsps [gb] Date 19.06.19 19:33 UTC
At 60 days a puppy is fully formed and viable . Look on YouTube xx
- By Gsd-lady Date 19.06.19 21:20 UTC
Had a good look through YouTube and from what I saw On there I saw on there looks like what we saw just not as clear, some you can actually see the mouths opening
- By onetwothreefour Date 20.06.19 11:42 UTC
Scans are only as good as whoever is doing them is good at interpreting them.

There are loads of people who are 'non-qualified' that are good scanners, and there are loads of vets who are rubbish at scanning.  So I don't think that tells you anything one way or the other.

Why are you still typing on here about it, though?  Personally I would already have contacted another vet - working my way through the phone directory if necessary - to find one who could x-ray and I'd have an answer by now...
