Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Walking mum after whelping - which disinfectant/wipes
- By Cracker [gb] Date 18.06.19 05:56 UTC
My bitch is going to be keen to walk about a week after whelping, I only intend taking her on short walks. Just interested in what disinfectant or wipes people use to clean a dog down before going in with the rest of the pups that is safe ?  It would also be useful to use on the rest of the dogs! Thanks

I can only tell you that my bitches are not at all keen to go for walks a week after whelping!  Is this your first litter?  If you have already had a litter with this bitch, then I suppose you know what she will do.  But if not, I would say that bitches are, a week after whelping, still VERY keen to be with their puppies at all times, and only go out to relieve themselves.

I don't use disinfectants after walks.  I avoid areas frequented by a lot of dogs (when I take my other dogs for walks), and I usually wash their feet when we get home (just water).  Mum simply stays home and is happy with that.

No not my first litter, not all breeds and bitches are the same. She is being very attentive but would like a short walk and even if this was 3 weeks along - really just interested in what wipes or disinfectant people use?

I don't use anything, on the basis unless I and everyone else that ever enters my house did it is pointless.

I avoid areas frequented by s lot of dogs and stick to road walking same for the rest of the canine family.  I can usually persuade mine to stay put for 10 - 14 days, after that they want a walk.

I do check local vets to see if there has been any outbreaks of canine disease in my area, and if I had heard of any then they would all stay home for a while..

Very diluted hibiscrub on legs and underbelly but i also avoid areas where dogs go. Mine also want walks soon after too. I think for their mental state this is a good idea

Me too with mine although if they've had a C Section, I avoid having to take them out-out until the stitches are removed.
