Does anyone have a rough guideline of how much it costs to have a whole litter microchipped? (Not vaccinated.)
I am a chipper but I haven't chipped since our last litter a few years ago and I'm a little worried I'm out of practice and wondered how much a vet would charge for it, next time...?

£10 per pup at one of our local practices and full health check at same time
Wow, that sounds very reasonable marisa. I suspect my vet will be more expensive
Folks who are saying £10/pup, does your vet charge a consultation fee on top of that? I mean, if you have a litter of 8 pups, is it £80 then? Or £80 plus a £35 consult fee??
Trying to work out if I should bother ordering more microchips to attempt chipping myself or just get vet to do them.

£16 a pup here plus consult fee. Wanted mine straight onto Petlog
Right, so the vet records all the puppies as owned by the breeder? That's what I did when I chipped our last litter.

Yes all went into rhe name of the breeder. There is the paperwork to hand over and a code so when they put kc reg into their names thwy use the code to move chip over at the same time.
Here's one more question:
What is the difference in cost between a vet doing a vet-check of a litter (no chipping) and a vet chipping the litter and also doing vet check?
As I have to get a vet check anyway before they go to new homes, is it that much more to get the vet to chip at the same time? Anyone know??

I had a litter of 9 vet checked and chipped at the same time. I was charged 2 consults on top of chipping.
Hmm, what does that mean?! One consult was for the vet check and the other was for the chipping?

Because it took over 2 consult time frames i was charged that plus chipping fee. Health check done at the same time too
So you said it was £16/pup for the chip above, so if you had 8 pups, that was £128, plus 2 consult fees (not sure what your vet's consult fees are, but let's say £30 x 2) = £188?

Yeah roughly that.. i could have had someone local chip them cheaper but i wanted a health check anyway and then they had another one just before they left. I wanted chips with petlog as well. If something is wrong at 6 weeks at least then i could make decisions, they were all fine but until you get that check you don't know for sure.

So a vet takes over-long doing what he has to do (or it takes longer than what is considered 'the norm'), and he can charge a double consult fee? Unbelievable! I'm not happy if my vet charges for a consult. which is a prelim. to surgery these days. My previous vet never did that- it was all built into the cost of the surgery. Greedy or what although I suppose if the vet knows the breeder has the income from the sale of say 7 of 8 puppies to come, (which given the average asking price for my main breed is now £1K) they can afford to pay that kind of charge?
Well, I guess if there is a vet check and chipping of 8+ puppies to do, it's going to take probably two appointments to do them all. I'd probably bring them in from the car in twos and that would be a lot of walking in and out(!!). Or - I might call the vet out to my house and avoid a trip there.
Microchip paperwork stuff to do, vet check form to fill in (if the vet has one, or can bring your own for the vet to tick) - it all takes time. I don't think 2 appointments is unreasonable - although £16 per pup when chipping a whole litter does sound a bit steep.
I've got to say that for my last litter, I chipped them myself and it cost £42 for 10 chips (only had 7 pups but had to buy chips in batches of 10) - with Petlog registration. I didn't take pups for a vet check, just told new owners to go immediately to their own vet for a vet check and vaccination. I now think it is best practice to get a vet check done myself and that way I also have proof of the condition they are in when they leave me - and I will do that from now on. I think I may as well get the vet to chip them now too... I won't do 1st vaccinations, I will leave new owners to do those and ensure they are all the same brand and no L2 and L4 compatibility problems.
