Hi Guest,
The American Cocker Spaniel is the smallest breed in the Gundog group. Bitches are between 13.5 and 14.5 inches tall at the shoulder, and dogs 14.5 and 15.5 inches. They are bold and inquisitive and very merry.Once mature, they will be pleased to take all the exercise you would like to provide even though they are so small. Americans are a very high maintainance breed, the long show coat needs lots and lots of care. People who keep this breed solely as pets have them trimmed at the groomers to keep the coat at a manageable length. They come in lots of colours, black, buff, black/tan, chocolate, choc/tan, black/white and tri colour. In the USA other colours are available that are unusual here in the UK.
As with every other breed there are some health problems you ought to know about. Hereditary Cateract is a problem that is being addressed at the moment. The Animal Health Trust is currently working on developing a DNA test to identify carriers of this disease. Progressive Retinal Atrophy and Glaucoma are also known in the breed. All breeding stock should be eye tested at least annually, and puppy buyers should ask to see certificates of puppy parents. You should expect to pay upwards of £500 for a puppy regardless of sex.
I hope this information is helpful, incidentally I have four American Cockers, two dogs and two bitches.
