My girl gave birth 3 weeks ago and had a vet check 3 weeks after the pups birth , my girl is small and weighs in at 4lb 8oz and the vet said she is underweight and that the baby's are draining her?

She is a small chi girl and looks perfectly health lots of energy and eats at least 3 meals aday ( keep her food bowl topped up every time it Empty ) she has dry food during day and meat in the mornings, she has been wormed etc is this a normal weight for a small chi girl?
Thankyou

It is perfrctly normal for a bitch to loose weight whilst feeding pups. Ok some may not but some bitches can just put their all into lactating/rearing & can look like they are an rspca case...no matter how much they are fed.

True.   At least as far as some of our nursing mums were.  Some looked really ribby, having given their all to their puppies despite being fed loads.  The good news is they usually put the condition back on, once off the litter.   You may need to start weaning the puppies sooner rather than later, at least to help her!

If you think she looks well, and you known how she normally looks, then I would take the vets opinion with a pinch of salt.

So many know little about breeding and don't realise how tatty their coats get, which makes them look thinner, or some look at a breed weight chart instead of looking and more importantly feeling the body condition.

Most pet dogs are overweight and people get used to seeing that, even vets.

If she has nutritious food, and as much as she wants, then I would not rush anything.  If pups want to start eating they will, if not they will when her milk starts to not be enough.

I am curious why you took her for a vet check at 3 weeks after the litter?  I personally avoid the vet at all costs when I have pups, as that is where sick animals are,  unless something is wrong.

She looks fine ribs not showing etc so couldn't understand the vets saying she is underweight I rung for advice in a wormer for her as wasn't sure what one she could have when feeding the pups and  told she needed a check up with the vet

Worm the bitch with panacur 10% at the same time as you worm the puppies.
