Hello

Only found out my girl was pregnant about 2 weeks ago,  15/03 she goes into labour luckily I had a experienced chi breeder on call waiting for her to go into labour gave birth to 3 big breach chi's and one small chi
They are now 4 days old today and last night I noticed the smallest of the litter is making a strange sound when drinking and for a short time after drinking I also started to see milk bubbles coming out of her nose! I quickly took her of from feeding used a suction bulb to clear the milk from her nose and throat and tilted her head and the noise started to disappear but this keeps happening the milk has only come out of her nose 2 times! I have had a look and can't see a cleft palate she has a strong suction when feeding and eats loads and is gaining weight she is catching up with the litter but I'm a bit worried about her

Mumma dog had a bit of a difficult time at first she didn't want to feed them and kept sitting on top of them 30 hours after the last pup was born I took my dog to the vet as I didn't see her pass the last 2 placentas! Vet checked her over done internal and said she was all clear she is very alert high energy and big appetite! She has settled into being a mummy now and is obsessed with her brand new babies yesterday after noon she started throwing up her food! But still continuing to eat and drink and nurse her babies any ideas on the pup and mum? I'm hoping they are both just being greedy and eating to much to soon sorry for long post !

These are classic signs of a cleft palate and unfortunately sometimes it can be really small and difficult to see.  I don't think there is much you can do, other than tube feed her if she starts to have real problems nursing or doesn't put weight on.

Try to ensure she feeds the pups just before you feed her, then keep her away from the pups (if you can) for at least 30mins after she's eaten.  The longer you can keep her away, the less likely she will throw up for them - but don't keep her away if she is excessively stressed about being separated from them...

I'd suggest this is very early for her to be regurgitating her food - this normally happens, if at all, at the time they should be started to be weaned.   Nature tells her when they are most likely ready for solids, and you'll see the puppies going at her mouth, to encourage this.   We rarely saw this in our litters,  mainly because I started weaning before this was necessary + moved her away from the litter when being fed.   Making sure they were topped up before she was fed.

What that puppy is doing would suggest cleft palate.  I think your vet needs to take a look, or your experienced mentor?

As long as she doesn't have a fever, it may just be that she's scarfing down her food, and it's 'bouncing'.

Thankyou for your response!
I will take the pup to my breeder friend for him to have a look I had a look and all looked in tact but he knows what he's looking for , is pnuemonia a likely outcome from a cleft palate?

I will try keep her away but the pups forever want feeding little pigs they are

Aspiration pneumonia is a risk, which is why tube-feeding is often recommended.  You get the milk where it needs to go and no risk...

Why did you only know 2 weeks ago that your bitch was in whelp ? As your user name shows what breed she is she would be showing in whelp before 7 weeks into her pregnancy ? Is the sire the same breed ? Are you aware apart from breed specific problems you are not supposed to mention the breed in posts about litters, it's deemed as advertising I understand

We never planned on letting her breed! I know both dogs were always kept apart so we are really puzzled on how our daughter g got hold of her as they sleep in separate cages when she's in season and also let out separately I can only assume someone slipped up and let them out together both dogs only come to Live with me a few weeks before we found out she was pregnant was gutted she was pregnant  as didn't want to put her body through the stress of it all but it was to late once we found out otherwise I would have done something about it!

Sire is same breed he's a big boy through and she's so much smaller
Maybe if I knew she has mated I would have noticed the signs alot sooner she did gain some weight but I put that down to the fact I changed her food to meat instead of dry when she comesl to live with me so I assumed she had gained a bit of weight through that
I didn't realise I couldn't mention the breed of the dog in the post I have read through so many posts and seen the breeds of dogs so thought it was allowed sorry

You are just not supposed to mention breed when it is regarding litters of puppies, as that can be seen as advertising.  anywhere else it's fine to mention a dogs breed.
