Hello all good evening!
So I’ve decided to breed my beautiful [medium breed] again this is her second and final litter...but I just wanted the opinions of others and they’re experiences. We are currently on day 54 so birth is just around the corner! She’s doing great so far! She’s just started getting her milk in, she’s uncomfortable and pants a little now and again, no nesting or discharge yet. The last litter she gave birth on day 63 just like text book and I just wanted to know from others about second litters coming earlier? Do second litters come earlier? Do they tend to be just as normal? Any experiences of others would be great
Many Thanks

I've never known second litters to arrive early; they all tend to have them 63 days after ovulation. Your bitch is getting her milk very early though; are you taking her temperature twice a day? That can be very helpful in determining the onset of labour.
I did think this would be the case myself but just wanted to see what everybody else’s experiences had been, she has got milk in but she is not leaking milk yet, I have started taking temps they have been a little up and down...lowest being 37.2 and highest being 38.0 over the last couple of days. I have spoken to the vet about this who was relauctant to see her as she is heavily pregnant and is happy to leave her be for the time being as she is showing no signs of early labour and pups are still moving around, but has advised to contact them ASAP if any signs of labouring early
My lab whelped 56 days after ovulation for her first litter and 58 for her second. She was much bigger second time and her milk came in earlier too.
Relax :-)
Thanks for your response...she is a lot bigger this time round, her first litter went to 63 days and we had 10 in that litter but sadly lost one 4 days after birth. Her milk has come in a lot earlier than it did on the first but I can’t say I’m worried after being reassured by my vet who is also a breeder herself. I just thought it would be interesting to get other people’s experiences of second litters. I’ve never know temps to be so up and down though if I must admit she’s pretty up and down. But while she’s happy I’m happy

Personally I don't take temperatures. She'll let you know when she's ready to whelp (I don't leave mine unattended form day 55).
Oh I do but more so as it’s what I’ve been advised in the past and it seemed to work well with her last litter although not every litter is the same I guess as it’s up and down this time...no I won’t be leaving my girl unattended either, I know some say to just leave them to get on with but I just couldn’t do that

I've not noticed that either fwiw. But each pregnancy has it's differences. Just to add don't 'milk' her. Newborn puppies tend not to always be able to, or need, lashings of milk. When the puppies start arriving, and nursing, the milk should come down. Which has been the case even with our 'Sectioned litters.
Chill - these final days are always a worry but you being stressed, won't help her
