Indeed.   Oxytocin is well known to me as my bitches, more often than not, went into secondary inertia - ouch mum = shut down.   Such is the sensitive Basset.  On one occasion with a reluctant whelper, and the distances involved, I had to camp out in one of our then vet's examination rooms.   As he lived over the practice, if I felt too much time had passed, I phoned him to come down and give another shot.  Thinking back I should have insisted on a C.Section but I think he probably didn't want to bring in other staff, and preferred her to 'whelp naturally' (hah) if possible.    With another later whelping, that bitch started but again shut down - I took her straight into my new vet who gave her a shot but nothing happened immediately so he sent me home with 2 doses of oxy. to give her.    I gave her one (hated doing it) but again nothing happened so I took her back into town (we were only 5 minutes outside that town) where they went ahead with a 'section and she produced 9 of the best puppies we'd had.   We kept 3.
