Hi there
Could people please give opinions (I have a scan booked in for two weeks time but I’m just curious as to what people think with previous experience)
My girl was mated by stud dog a week yesterday. They didn’t tie but he had a go a few times and on the final attempt my girl didn’t like it- she growled and also when he pulled out she cried ( I think he got off just as they were about to lock) we weren’t sure if they had done the deed or not.
However since her nipples have changed over the last week being slightly pinker and more prominent. We decided we would take her back the following Sunday (so yesterday) as had a ovulation test done at vets mid week. This suggested she had already ovulated and they said there was a high chance she already was but to go again to be sure. We went back to stud dog yesterday and he paid no attention whatsoever, they just played all day. This is a massive difference to the previous week where he was humping the air for a good 6 hours when he was even mounting her! Do you think she is giving off a different smell as seems he ignored her seeing as she would only be day 18 on second mating? Would he be able to tell after a week that she could be pregnant which is why he showed no interest?
Thanks in advance for opinions

An experienced stud dog may well 'know' he's done the job, most likely by her scent. However, a week after the mating, even with a slip tie, would suggest she has gone over. One of my studs never achieved a tie, but he only missed once to a bitch who came back to my other dog on her next season, missed again, went to another dog and missed again. Clearly getting her in whelp wasn't to be. We used to 'up end' the bitches he mated with, to help but normally it's the first ejaculation that should get where it's needed. Tie or not.
Best you can do is wait. I don't bother with scans as that only tells you if there's a pregnancy at the time of the scan.
Thank you for your response. Yes it strange! the stud dog tied with his last bitch but with my girl they didn’t acheieve although he was on her for a few minutes. I think it may of happened as her nipples look different and she’s done a couple of strange things, but who knows. Have you previously got any kind of scan done or none at all? She was on the 11th day when we first took her and the week later the 18th. We had the test done at vets a couple of days before we went back for second time and she said she was still highly fertile and ovulating so would definitely be worth going so I’m just baffled to why the stud dog would ignore her when she’s still fertile and he was so keen before. Thanks again :)
It’s likely next week will be far to early for scanning. It sounds like you were too late for the second mating, it would have been better to try a day or two after the slip mating.
Thank you for your message! We wanted to try a day or two after first mating however the dog is a friend of a friends and is in York! (Were in Hertfordshire which is why we couldn’t go till weekend after)
The scan is on 14th March so is over 3 weeks from when she was first mated so I think that is the right time and is when vet recommended?
It would be very unusual for a bitch to be fertile for an entire 7 day period and for you to have hit 7 days when she is...
I think it's more likely that she had gone over by the time of the 2nd mating and the stud dog knows this. You say she had a test 'a couple of days' before at the vets - dogs can enter diestrus very rapidly, within hours - so a test done 2 days before you attempt a mating, especially that far into her season, doesn't mean she's still fertile 2 days later.
Ok thank you for your message. I am very new to all this so good to get everyone’s opinions.
I see what you mean, the vet said on Friday last week that she had already ovulated so it was likely she caught on the Sunday at first mating but they couldn’t be sure. She then said she is very fertile still which will decrease each day but she is ovulating again.
I have experience in breeding horses and if the mare has already caught the stallion will often stay away and wouldn’t try it so I wondered if it was similar in dogs.
Thank you!

It sounds like she's gone over; the best time to mate is 2 days after ovulation, to a maximum of 5 days afterwards (she won't ovulate a second time). This is why the dog's not interested any more - no point in mating a bitch when she's no longer receptive!
Get her scanned 28-30 days after the slip mating (was nobody holding the bitch steady and reassuring her?) - this is about the earliest that you'll see any pregnancy.
csparks37, the bitch has no knowledge of whether a breeding is going to result in pregnancy in order to make a decision to stay away or not...!
So, that part is not the same in dogs. It would have been best to try again 48hrs after the slip mating. That would give the stud time to make more semen and the timing would hopefully have been better.
If the bitch is past her fertile time, she will often refuse the stud. That is when she has gone from estrus into diestrus.
Semen lives for between 3-5 days - 7 days if it is good quality - so you might well see a pregnancy from the first breeding even if it was a bit early.
You can't tell anything from nipples getting bigger etc etc at this early stage.
I go to an experienced scanner and he scans at around Day 28.
Ok thanks everyone. I was holding her yes- she didn’t move but the dog got off just before they started to lock. Whatever is meant to be will be- so we will see. Her scan is on the 25th day after mating- is that too early then as that’s what the vet who is also a breeder recommended?
Thanks

The main thing I saw with my girls, post mating, was the vulva didn't go back to how it was post-season with no mating. Not talking about how a maiden bitch (first season) would look after that first season. And again with a bitch after a first season, the teats can be more pronounced than before the first season. She's 'all grown up'

If you have an urgent need to know re a pregnancy or not, always remember the scan only confirms this at the time the scan is done. Not that the bitch will carry to term. We never bothered, but if I'd done a planned mating, I waited, assuming my bitch was probably in whelp. If nothing happened, I'd go for x-ray a couple of days after the due date, to confirm what was going on.
Day 25 is a little early. I would go for day 28-30 from the first mating.

My experienced canine scanner won't scan before 30 days after last mating. This time I went at 35 days from first mating and the difference in what was on screen was markedly better.
