Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Puppy Return Policy's

I generally have a very lenient policy on returns.  However, I have a puppy we sold as pet quality.  Now the new owner has decided they do not want her.  They miss informed me of where they lived.  It seems they live in an apartment.  On my contract it states that they must have an enclosed yard to play in.  They are now wanting to return her, for now fault of the puppy.  The reason I got was that she does not like to stay in her crate, and is chewing her bed up.  My solution was to remove the bed for now, make sure the puppy is getting enough exercise,  and not put her in the crate unless she is unsupervised.  I have had this puppy crated before and she was perfect, no accidents no destructive behavior. Also please note that this puppy was not up for sale at the time we sold her.  This person seeked us out to get a pup.  It seemed at the time they were very eager, to have one of our pups.   I have told this person that we would be happy to take the pup back, and have offered them 50% of the money back.  Per my contract we really are not obligated to refund any money.  I would just like to know other breeders opinion on this?  Thank you in advance

I am not a breeder but nevertheless I have an opinion on this. The most important thing is getting this unwanted puppy back to the safety of your home. As her breeder, you have lifelong responsibility to take her in, no matter what. So in your position I would give back 100% of the purchase price to avoid any risk that she might be sold on to a stranger for more money and you lose contact altogether. Don't procrastinate, get her back at the earliest opportunity, she needs you now.

How old is the puppy?

How old is the pup and how long have they had it?

When I was planning mine there was a a certain amount of time where the pup could be brought back for a full refund, once it was of an age where it's 'resell' value is less it could be brought back and once rehomed the old owner would get all the money the pup was rehomed for minus expenses incurred.

This seems the fairest way to me and should make the owners not feel like they are better of just selling the pup/dog on to get the money.

Thankfully I only had to get involved with this situation once.   She was an older puppy who, once I had a litter from the litter sister of the dam, I decided this older puppy wasn't really as good as the puppies in the second litter.   So I offered her for sale.  At a reduced price obviously.   Sadly that home didn't work out so I had her back and told them that I'd give them what I later sold her for, minus a minimal 'boarding' fee depending on for how long I had her before I found 'the right home' for her.  They seemed ok with this and as it happened a perfect home for her turned up, quite quickly.  These people then came back at me asking for ALL the money to be refunded.   Clearly they'd been talking to others about what happened.  I was just more than relieved to get her out of that first home - apparently they had a squaddie son who had been kicking a football AT her, scaring her to death, poor girl.  This I'd not bargained for when I let her go.

In other words I'd always concentrate on getting a puppy back, above anything else.
