i took my dog for progesterone test last saturday on day 9 as its closed Sunday the reading was 2.10 they said either go the stud tuesday or have another test, i decided the stud as this would be day 12. My dog is turning the tail lifting the vulva and tormenting him, he mounts sometimes but not with great effort, its his first time but he is 9 years old as they wanted to keep the blood line going for the male, the male had sample taken to check he has active sperm few weeks before by the vet.  After nothing much happening on day 12 or 13 i asked could they go the vet on day 14 for AI, they went but the vet couldnt get the male active to give sample and my dog was in front of him so the vet said he must be stressed return the morning after which they did and the result was the same, i travelled down to see if my dog was ok, yesterday she was day 16 and constantly searching for the male turning and lifting her tail and vulva sometimes when he licked she cried and snapped, i tried holding her head but the male just walked off, mine just stood waiting. I am not sure why the male isnt hounding her could it be that the progesterone test was completly wrong, my dog decided to start mounting him as if she was saying its like this, which he didnt like her doing that my dog isnt maiden she has had a litter before and tied on her first breeding on day 13 and only did 1 tie she produced 9 pups.  Her blood yesterday was rose colour.  Do you think she may still not be ready?

Your bitch is probably ready but trying to use a dog at 9 who hasn't been used before is likely to fail(ok, there can be exceptions)...Unless you have another stud in mind to use now, you will need to wait until next season in my opinion.

thanks for the reply, i also wondered how could the vet not get him to perform to do AI, when he does get on it was like he was seeing if she was ok with it first and she would move a little so he would get off.  If the breeding doesnt happen this time with this male i wont take her back to him

Well anything is possible really because you have only done one progesterone test on day 9 and you have not established ovulation.  You need far more than one progesterone test to determine anything, you need to test until you identify ovulation.  Predictions are just that - predictions - anything can happen and many bitches don't read the book.

When you are using a dog for the first time, you really need to ensure the bitch is ready - because if she isn't, she will tell him off and when she is then ready, he will be too afraid to mount and you won't get a breeding.
