Anyone got any good tips for masking the scent of a bitch on heat?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 28.02.03 15:20 UTC
Hi,
I've used "Amplex" chlorophyll tablets in the past, and it seems to have been successful as we never had 'callers' outside the house! I've also used the "Antimate" liquid (on the bitches! :D), but I know of some stud-dogs who recognise that scent as a sign that there's a season going on somewhere - they're not stupid! :)

Amplex as in the human Amplex? How do you do that?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 28.02.03 15:36 UTC
They used to sell it in the petshops....green box - green tablets. There'll be something along those lines...Antimate do their own version, but the Amplex were cheaper. :)

This may sound stupid but how does something taken orally effect the "other end"?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 28.02.03 15:45 UTC
It seems to work as a general body deodoriser....does turn their poo green, though! :D

Edit: PS....OMG!!! You didn't think you had to put the tablets there did you?!

Amplex have been removed from the Veterinary list. Are they the same as the human variety? If so what doseage and how would they be administered.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 28.02.03 19:42 UTC
To be honest I've only ever seen the veterinary variety which we bought at the petshop (admittedly quite a few years ago now). They were just a bright green chalky-type tablet, and the dosage was 1 per 10k dog's bodyweight (I think). Sorry to be so vague...I wonder why they took them off the market? They could be used for dog halitosis as well....

Sorry to build up your hopes just to have them knocked down...:( Perhaps if you ask in a good petshop they might know of an alternative? Good luck :)

Hi my bitch has just been in season for the first time and ive used a product called Johnstons bitch and deodorant tablets. Its for breath and body odours especially for bitches on heat. i aslo used the Johnstons bitch spray before taking her for a walk. whilst on these tablets and spray she was walked with a entire male who only sniffed at her on a couple of occasions in the middle of her cycle. these tablets were got from the local pet shop and i noticed a few other makes as well. We havent even had any dogs sniffing round the garden.
But i strongly advise you not to let your dog off the lead as sometimes bitches tend to take off looking for a mate.
Good luck

I looked at the human ones and they have different ingredients now!

The amplex tabs for pets are done by Sherleys, adn I find them very effective. Not being a driver I have to walk my girls to and from the house, and have never had any followers, though an efficient dog warden does help!!

Sherleys deodorising tablets, come in a little pot. I always bought a pot of 100, and recently asked a pet shop to get them in for me, same size pot, but only 50, so make sure you get the larger amount.

Also I have been told that you cna buy chlorophyl tablets at some chemists, as they are used in colostomy bags to neutralise odour! I did ask one ner me and they don't do them, but must try a few morte, as I am sure they would be cheaper.

Each of the sherleys tabs contains 35mg of Chlorophyl.

Dosage is:
Bitches in season 4 or 5 times a day
Small breeds 1/2 tablet
Medium breeds 1 Tablet
Large breeds 2 tablets
Increase dose at night and at peak of season.

Other odours 1 tablet morning and night!

They are also effective for bad breath!

Many thanks to all of you who have helped so far. I will certainly be following up on your advice as soon as the shops and chemists open. Any other info you can give me will be equally appreciated.
