Hi all

I wanted to use panacur on my bitch but my vet is recommending Milbemax and advance.

I am now thinking i might not worm her at all and wait till pups are born as i dont like the idea of giving her anything while pregnant... plus the last 2 days she has been 'loose' so dont really want to give a wormer and upset her tummy more.

Any advice please?

Somebody pointed me in the direction Feelwells natural wormer, Ive no idea how good they are or if there are any problems associated with something like this. Would be interested to hear if anyone has had any experience with them

Milbemax is not suitable for all breeds.  I've had many years of breeding and have always used Panacur 10% during the bitches pregnancy.  No problems whatsoever.  Remember that pregnancy hormones awaken the dormant worms, meaning pups would be born full of worms.  I would recommend Panacur 100%.

I concur with JeanSW, I am now awaiting a litter of 8th generation pups, and all my bitches have been wormed for the last 3 weeks of pregnancy with Panacur 10%.

The only issue I ever had was worming at 2 and 5 weeks, as per packaging.  Prior to that occasion the vet had dispensed and given instructions to worm at 4 and 8 weeks, and I had no issues.

As pups are likely to be virtually worm free I have always wormed at 3 and 7 weeks, this allows me to worm once I start solids and the second worming allows pups tums to settle before going to new homes where I advise worming at 11 weeks so that it falls between vaccinations..

IF you're going to worm, then use Panacur 10% following the instructions for use during pregnancy on the data sheet that comes with it - don't use Milbemax.

I didn't worm on our last litter because mum has a dodgy tum in response to wormers and I didn't want to risk that during pregnancy.  Pups had no evidence of worms and were first wormed at either 2 or 3 weeks.

We wormed our bitches before being mated (Panacur) - along with bringing any boosters utd.

We then wormed her when the puppies were 2 weeks, and being wormed for the first time too. 

Our current buy in was, allegedly, wormed with Milbemax but he was either not wormed, or it didn't work because after producing nasty stools, he tested positive for Giardia (for which Milbemax may not have been appropriate) AND roundworm ova.
