Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Is this a puppy farm???????????
- By guest [gb] Date 26.02.03 15:06 UTC
Hello all doggy lovers,
I answered a ad in our local paper in west yorkshire regarding a miniture schnauzer puppy for my 7 year old son a few weeks back & have only just found this site, when i rang the person i asked all relevant questions as regards to health checks and if i could see the parents as the advert said the puppies were house reared & he went rabbiting on about how many other breeds he had bred and that he had only been breeding miniature schnauzers for 3 years but had had over 200 puppies from them & had made in excess of £20,000 & that all his dogs were kenneled (excuse me but his advert said lovingly house reared).
Is this a puppy farm & should i stay clear as i am tempted to take a puppy just to make sure at least one little sole gets a good life.
A distressed dog lover
please help
& how do i get a name like the rest of the people on this message board.

Please try not to be tempted to "rescue" one from this man - he is not a specialist breeder and is unlikely to have done all the specialist health checks on his bitches, so the poor pups are unlikely to be good pet prospects :(. I think you'd be letting yourself in for a lot of heartache and expense, and the pup you buy would quickly be replaced by another at this place. The only way to put these people out of business is to steer well clear - the more pups they sell, the more they'll carry on.

I think the question you need to ask yourself is "has this person told me anything that makes me believe the puppies have been bred in a way that I am happy with?" If you can't answer yes - then you know now what to do. If you then believe it to be a farm then buying a puppy from it simply perpetuates the problem and potentially lands you with a problem in the not to distant future that could cost you money let alone lots of heartache.

Having found this board - you can ask specifically about MS puppies and reputable breeders if you register. Be prepared to wait for a puppy from such a breeder as they may not have one now - but planning properly for one in the near future.

I'm afraid I'd have been put off by that straight away if someone asks me for a pup for their child ,so I hope you meant for a family Pet well certainly hope so I wouldnt consider a seven year old capable of caring for a dog

And yes I would think this person is a puppy farmer wonder if he pays income tax on all thoses litters? and has a breeders licence

Hello Mattie,
I have finally registered with Champdogs :) No the dog is not just for my 7 year old son it will be a family pet, obviously i wouldn't expect a 7 year old to take on such a responsibilty but it is he who has tormented our lives out for 2 years now since our 13 year old rescue labrador died he misses the companionship which he had with sammy & i doubt any other labrador could replace him.

I have today visited the kennels & was appalled at the condition of the dogs some of his mini schnauzers have no hair on their backs it is just like a piece of leather & they look very out of condition to me ( even the bitchs without puppies) the puppies look 'ok' they are ready to go in 2 weeks & all eye tests have been done on the parents they are asking £450 for them KC reg & good pedigree so they say. All the pedigree is in blue pen & i couldn't see any champion dogs on it at all & i would have prefered them to come from people who show as i have been told the temperament & health are usually alot better, is that right?

My heart strings are wavering over my decision at the moment as i would really like to take one of the little ones so it has a good life, but at the end of the day i don't want the puppy to have any problems & end up dead or something so i am going to look for a reputable breeder & hold out for as long as possible for the right puppy.
Thanks all
Christina.
P.S By the way they have no breeders licence & there must have been at least 40 dogs there.

Hi Christina, welcome to the Board!!
Well done for resisting the pups from that place - if the adults don't look well, then the pups won't be either :(. If the dogs have no hair on their backs they have some health problem, whether it's fleas, mange or something else (some of these things can be contracted by people) and the pups are almost guaranteed to catch it - and vet bills for a healthy pup are quite bad enough, without it being sickly! I wouldn't want your son to be distressed at possibly losing a new pet.
Good luck. :)

Poor you, Christina, but be strong and hold out for the right puppy - for every person who buys one, he'll breed another, so you wouldn't be doing the dogs a favour in the long run. :(

Hi Christine,

Please, please, please do your best not to 'foolow your heart'!
It sound hard but after our experience with Sonny ( a puppy farm dog) I would never purchase a puppy from one of these places again. Although at the time we thought we were buying from a reputable breeder - I knew nothing much at all about getting a puppy - Sonny was imported from Ireland and for most of the time was a lovely dog - until he turned and bit my son badly:(
If you want a dog for your son, then I would say choose with great care and after seeing the mum etc.
It must be so hard for you after seeing these poor puppies but hold out for the right one, for your familiy's sake.

Hello all,
Thanks for your comments & advice. I can't find your e-mail address pat (i'm not too good with computers you see!) but i can tell you the breeders are in castleford west yorkshire.
I have now been put on a waiting list for a puppy from a breeder in the west midlands who breeds miniature schnauzers & beagles? i think she said. Anyway i may have to wait a year to get a puppy from them but at least i know that their dogs have been well looked after & aren't bred from every 6 months.
regards
christina.
