Had Zuma in vets yesterday as he had a raw patch on his leg ( he has had same thing before on different leg and on tail. I had been sorting it myself but took him up as nearly run out of pom cream to use.
He is standard shepherd wuss and creates when I take 'proper' vetwrap off as it sticks to itself so well. I have bought some myself which is easier to remove and took a roll with me - no problem, vet happy to use it instead to hold a melolin dressing on.
They have updated their computer system and we now get an itemised receipt.
I quite understand why there is a markup on meds and pay with no complaints BUT I was charged £1.70 for a 10cm square melolin when I had paid 50pence each for them in Sainsburys last week,
Over 300% mark up .......... come on !!!

Sainsbugs can afford a lower markup because they'll be selling a lot more of them! Economies of scale.

I recently had the misfortune to have one of my dogs at the nearest vet hospital. Thankfully she is in the road to recovery but £1 for one paracetamol tablet caused raised eyebrows even at my own vets.

Watchdog did a feature on the subject a few weeks ago. It focuses on prescription meds mainly.

I have far less of a problem with mark up on prescription stuff as you pay for the knowledge of which works on what, it was just the mark up on stuff anyone can pick up at any chemist or pharmacy.
I got another half dozen in Sainsburys, the same girl served me and had a chat about the dog  her face was a picture when I told her what I had been charged :eek:

Paid £14 from vet for 30ml tube of dermasol, £7 online could have used Sudacrem for £2....  I understand they need a mark up but it is no wonder that people get put off from taking their pets in.

I tend to agree about vet costs - however I needed a big roll of cottonwool for one of my hound's ear cleaning.   It was WAY cheaper buying via my vet.   On the other hand, almost ALL products/meds they prescribe can be found a lot cheaper via many of the Vet Meds website/companies.  Which is where I buy if I need repeats.... unless it's prescription only which I do have for the Metacam my hound (same one) needs.   They charged me £14. for the prescription last time but it still worked out a lot cheaper for the biggest bottle, than from them.

What REALLY bugs me about vet bills is the VAT we have to pay - and we are required BY LAW to have our dogs treated!!   When I think about what I've contributed to the Government over the years via VAT!!!   Including euth costs!
