I have posted on this forum before under another name that I cannot remember.   I was unhappy with my vet that I had been going to for over six years.  I intended to get a second opinion but changed vets completely.  They started from the beginning.   The blood test covered her thyroid and allergies and other things.   The result showed she was on the wrong dose for the thyroid.  It had to increase.  It also showed she did not have any allergies.   She was prescribed apoquel and anti-biotics.   Her hair has grown back in the space of a week.   She is now happier and like a one year old.   She still has dandruff so she had two baths at the vets.  I said not to use Malaseb as she had a bad reaction to it.  So she was bathed in Adaxio and had the same reaction.  As this is a fungal infection has anyone got any idea what to use instead.  The vet is open to ideas.

I would try adding a small amount of neem oil or tea tree oil in a sensitive skin (oatmeal type) shampoo.   Leave on for a few mins.

Canasten may work.

The dermacton range has a pretty good rep  and is more gentle than the others.it may not be specific to yeasts bit then neither is malesab .

We have had skin problems and needed baths amongst other things .an increase in omega 3 in the diet can help too .there are different ways to do this but nutramega from the vet is good or adding salmon oil or similar to the diet

This vet has prescribed Sebolytic shampoo.   They want to bathe her.   Petplan will not cover her for the bathing.  It is twice a week at 54.32 each time. I cannot afford it. So dog has to go without.  I pay more than that in monthly premiums.  Their advertisement shows a dog with a skin condition getting 5 years of treatment.

Will they not sell.the shampoo to u ? Mine had to be bathed in malasab which is similar requently due to a skin condition and I just bought the shampoo and used at home ?
Not sure why pet plan won't pay as if it is prescribed as part of the treatment as mine was pet plan paid for all the shampoos I needed . Unless u have an accident only policy ?
You other option is too look forward a shampoo that can be used for treatment of skin condition that is not vet prescribed. Dermacton has a very good reputation for these things and is available on line

Rather than using Malaseb, which is too harsh for my hounds who need that kind of treatment, I used DermOpt.   And I now have another I bought online called Dermocanis which seems equally more gentle than Malaseb.

I too can't see why your vet won't sell you the shampoo they use, so you can do it yourself at home?

Sebolytic  shampoo is available from Amazon for £18 ish . It looks like it is for more greasy skin conditions than malesab which I agree is harsh but was ok for mine although I wasn't suggesting using malasab given earlier post. I would either get the one vet suggested on line or one of.the others suggested .unless there is more going on I very never come across a vet who wants to bathe a dog instead unless u have asked them to for other reasons .

The first shampoo she had was Malaseb and it was too strong and she had a reaction.  The vet bathed her.   Petplan paid.   The next was Abodex, excuse spelling.   The vet bathed her and same reaction as Malaseb.   Petplan paid.   Now Sebolytic.   Vet bathed her.   Perfect.   Petplan paid.   2nd bath and Petplan changed their mind.   Vet surgery telephoned Petplan and they said the other claims had slipped through.  We cannot bathe her ourselves.   My groomer I have used for years would charge £20 but vet wants to view her immediately after bathing. We are going for 3rd bath tomorrow.  I said to them right at the start let my groomer do it.  My dog was bad.  She was like the poor dogs on television.  My previous vet was awful so I am glad I have changed.  My dog was nearly bald and itchy and elephant skin.   With Apoquel she has all her hair back and really thick, but has really bad dandruff which the vet says is yeast.

Oh dear . I am very surprised about pet plan given my own experience with the same. I guess your only recourse would be the ombudsman once.u have raised a complaint with pp  otherwise apart from u buying online and paying the vet  to bathe her it looks like u are in a difficult position

I telephoned PP again and was told to ask the vet to e-mail and it would be looked at again.

I have taken her in again Monday and he wants to do the same Friday but said I couldn't.  Thought I would do Monday next week to give PP a chance to reply.  If I didn't have insurance I would pay because I wouldn't know any difference.  I don't think I'm doing her wrong.  Vet is now going to give her supplements in tablet form as well.

When you say dandruff, have they ruled out cheyletiella mite?
- By onetwothreefour Date 11.12.18 15:04 UTC
This seems a bit crazy.  I would get your vet to phone PetPlan directly and or write to them, to state that they want to bathe her themselves and/or view her immediately after bathing.  They can't refuse to pay something the vet prescribes.
