Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Vaccination - Licenses and assured breeders
- By Torquaysun [gb] Date 30.11.18 15:13 UTC
(1st question) As an assured KC breeder you are required to keep your dogs vaccinated up to date is that correct?   New licenses also state this in DEFRA paperwork, however, I know a local kennel who boasts on their website they don't vaccinate and license visitor understands why.

(2nd question) Can anyone shed any light, anyone who has been visited was this pushed for?

(3rd question) I was planning on taking my x2 girls to vet next week to start vaccines as they haven't had them since pups (now age 3 & 5 and recently purchased).

(4th question) I read somewhere that puppy vacs can last until they are nearly 7 years old - does anyone know where i can read up more on this?

Thank you - really appreciate your help

Have a look at research done by Dr Jean Dodds and Ron Shultz also have read of the wsava paperwork . 7 years was as far as the research went and it was considered that lifetime was expected. Core vaccines only not including lepto . Some kennels can accept titres insteads of vaccines and some councils will licence using either option .lepto cannot be titres tested for .the map test which can be used tends not to be available to the general public unless lepto is suspected
Personnel I only vaccinate as pups and in future having learned more will titres at around 6 weeks later and no more if immunity is proven

If your pup's were mine I would either titre bearing in mind that it's Likely you won't get the results u want unless they have recently been in contact with those diseases so the body has mounted a challenge or assume they would of attain natural immunity by now .if u decided to vaccinate I wouldn't give the whole program again but just one as there is no mother's immunity to interfere at their age  and the titre in 6 weeks.
It's a very controversial subject and I know others will disagree :)

I am as Assured Breeder and have regular visits - never been asked to provide vaccination paperwork.

There are several pages on Facebook relating to vaccinations and must also be on the internet if you do a search.  If you're unsure, titre testing is the way to go

As I read all this, I'm thankful that my breeding days are over!

We had our puppies vaccinated, from 10 weeks and repeated as our vet(s) advised.  We repeated 12 months on.    Once it was felt these boosters, other than for Lepto/rabies where legally required, only needed doing 3-yearly, that's what we have been doing.   The one for Lepto, as I understand it, dips over a 12 month period and should be boostered annually.   This comes under the 'if it's there to be used, why not use it'.

However, as I have been doing for years, once our hounds got up to around 7 - 8 years, we did not more boostering, other than for rabies when we lived in a country with this.    I did have my vet on call to warn me if, once Parvo was around, there was a local flare in which case, I'd wheel in my lapsed hounds to be brought up to date.   That never happened.   We did have rats around (visibly and in numbers) last Winter and as these two are now lapsed, I had them in for Lapto shots, just in case.

Sometimes I think we are under too many 'restrictions'.   But then these days there are far too many BYBs etc. around so the few have to conform for the sake of the masses.

For more info FB  canine health concern has alot of info in the files but be aware they are very anti Vax  so u need to know that before starting a  conversation .they do have the info though regardless of your stance . Healthy pets is another but again all natural .

I'm not an Assured breeder.  I wouldn't want to be one if I had to keep vaccinations 'up to date', but then I'd be asking what 'up to date' means, exactly?  Whose version of 'up to date'?  What about titer tests being able to replace that?  Including which vaccinations, just the main 3 or also lepto?  Without details it's hard to comment...

>(3rd question) I was planning on taking my x2 girls to vet next week to start vaccines as they haven't had them since pups (now age 3 & 5 and recently purchased).

I wouldn't do that unless you know 100% it is necessary and/or you believe it is the best for your dogs.  It is highly unlikely they need more vaccinations now and you could always titer test to check...

You don't have to keep vaccinations up to date as an AB, as long as you've discussed it with your vet (which they don't require proof of). I was asked for certificates to be seen both times I've been inspected, it was picking one at random, basically just checking the dogs had been done at some point in their lives. At the first visit they were all up to date and the assessor said he doesn't see that often as most breeders don't booster. At the second visit only a few were up to date, different assessor. No problem either time.

ABS do not require you vaccinate your dogs, just see that you are doing something to protect them, like nosodes and or titre testing.
