Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Would an ultrasound determine whether pug would need a c s

Im pretty sure my little girl a pug is pregnant if she is she's approx 5 weeks, she's quite a small bitch and the stud was slightly bigger than her but not a lot, im wondering would an ultrasound determine weather or not she would need a csection, the breeder that i bought her from breeds a lot of pugs and they have all had whelped naturally with no problems,

Ultrasounds are used to confirm pregnancy on the day of the scan. I don't think they can predict if a CS is going to be required, certainly can't predict. CS in sheep

I have bred toys for many years (a breed that often has uterine inertia, so needing a section.)  As pugs are notorious for problem whelpings I would be inclined to wait until she is closer to her due date.  There are no risks in x-raying a bitch that is close to due date, and you would get a far clearer picture of too large pups.  An experienced vet would give you an idea of how things are likely to proceed.  An ultrasound would just show you that the hearts are beating.   I would go for an x-ray every time.

I absolutely would never x-ray a pregnant bitch unless it were a real emergency and lives depended on it:  https://www.avidog.com/how-badly-do-we-need-to-know/

There is a reason we don't x-ray pregnant women....

I'd wait until she's close to her due date and maybe even until she starts and has difficulty (except by then most vets would probably go straight to C.Section).   We've had bitches close to whelping date x-rayed and they were fine.   Scans will only confirm, or rule out, a pregnancy, at the time of the scan.

I was x-rayed when I was pregnant, but was 48 years ago. The foetus was a little undersized, but she was perfectly healthy when born.

It's not about harming the foetus in a way you will immediately notice - have a read of the article above - it's about x-rays predisposing that person or dog to cancer, later in life.  We know radiation causes cancer anyway, but when applied to an immature neonatal dog (or baby) the risk is far greater.

I didn't have an x-ray done to know the number of puppies.   I would, however advise having one if the male was significantly bigger than the bitch (if I were ever in that situation!) rather than risk her being in serious trouble trying to deliver whelps who were just too big to be safely delivered, naturally.

If the labour was difficult but without a C.Section, I might opt for x-ray, to confirm whether or not the bitch was empty.   And ditto for a small (one only) litter that didn't progress to a normal delivery, prior to opening her up ('section).

My toy breed was mated on 23rd 25th and 27th october if she's pregnant this is her 1st time , her nipples have tripled in size her waist has expanded a little on one side but the other side is a noticeable bulge she's had clear discharge for the last couple of wks ( not loads and not smelly) Im taking her to be scanned on tuesday, but i just want to know if she is pregnant is it normal to be showing more on one side .

Its quite late for a scan, but a good scanner will say whether pregnant or not and if there is anything going on which is a concern

She sounds pregnant. I wouldn't really expect to see much weight gain etc yet, but no, a bulge on one side is not normal.
