- By Mishelly1 [gb] Date 13.11.18 20:35 UTC
Can anyone help my 6 wk old pup fell down my stairs I live in upstairs flat the safty gate was shut he managed to get under and fell down my stairs I took him to vets and there saying he seems ok apart from high tem I've been giving antibiotics and painkiller but he still runs around crying wont play like he used to I'm so afraid it could be slight brain damage but vet says they have no way of telling as it cost £2000 for a mri scan I would just like to no if anyone has had same situation and what was there outcome. He seems ok apart from walking around crying and not wanting to play or be cuddled like he used to

How long have you had this 6 week old puppy ? I thought is had been illegal to sell puppies under 8 weeks of age since 1st October this year

He's my pup and I've got mum to !!
- By furriefriends Date 13.11.18 22:05 UTC
Sounds like he  maybe shocked and still in pain .assuming this happened a few hours ago If things don't improve rapidly I would ring the vet even if it's after hours .imo getting him calm and comfortable is your first concern .if there is brain damage finding out about that can come later

Yes hes still going to mum shes in the middle of not want to feed him with him having all his teeth. But hes following her more and crying hes not dehydrated at all I've been making sure he drinks lots but hes not a big eater hes only a toybread but i do make his food up with whelpi milk in just worried hes got long term effects hes okay apart from he doesn't play like he used to the vets said they can't see any signs of brain trauma but they can't be sure

I understand but if you are still concerned about his behaviour and he is crying and perhaps still in pain  he may need something else.is it a bit odd that a fall with no apparent injury caused an increase in his temperature that required antibiotics usually given for an infection ? Only a vet and possibly further investigation will tell if there is more serious injury than fist appears.i am assuming this has happened today
Maybe others can give advise

1.  I have to ask why you have a 6 week puppy- it is illegal in many countries now to sell puppies of under 8 weeks, unless your family bred him?
2.  Why is he running a fever - so needing antibiotics?   Is there something else going on with him  - eg Parvo?  because if you did buy him at such a young age, this smacks of BYBing so it's quite possible he came to you with this often fatal disease
3.   Reading your further comments, so your family DID breed him - feeding from mum..... which begs the further question...
4.   Why? - at 6 weeks he should be pretty much weaned onto solids, so there's no need to be involving poor mum (sharp teeth)

To be honest, I'm not sure I believe any of what you are saying.   Went under the baby gate and fell down the stairs?   What about the others in the litter .... or was he a singleton puppy?   Our 6 week puppies were still in a big whelping box, or out in the garden in an ex-pen.  Not able to get anywhere near stairs for sure.

I guess, if you can't have an MRI done, you'll just have to give it time and hope - high temperature apart, puppies do tend to 'bounce'.   Personally I'd be more concerned about why he has a fever.

Re the 6 weeks old shes already posted above she bred him and has his mum.

Hmm, there are a few things I'm not understanding...

Puppies that fall downstairs and hurt themselves don't really run temperatures.  Temperatures are signs of infections, not really localised injuries.  (Unless they are really severe, but if your vet hasn't kept the pup in, I doubt that's the case.)

I get that you have mum and bred the pup.  But - like MamaBas says - where is the rest of the litter - they are not mentioned anywhere - and why do you call him 'your' puppy?  As in 'my' puppy fell down the stairs?  Instead of 'we have a litter and one of the pups fell down the stairs'?  It doesn't quite add up to me.  I guess it's possible he's a singleton pup and you decided from the beginning to keep him, but it's not that likely...

Taking the post as an honest question surely it is  really only this pup that we need to be concerned about .If he fell and is still showing  discomfort as in crying and not wanting to be picked up /cuddled I would speak to the vet again given it must now be at least 24 hours since the fall . as for temperature immediately after the fall ? and need for abs just because of the fall unless he sustained cuts would be a worry

God heavens. Can we put the thumb-screws away please. This member has turned to you for help/advice. Can we not pick to bits everything they say. They are not on trial here, they are looking for help/reassurance.

> surely it is  really only this pup that we need to be concerned about

I would just like to say that in order to offer my advice, I need to have more information.   Otherwise I can't.   I'm not using thumb-screws, just this question taken on face value, doesn't make a lot of sense.   Puppies who fall down stairs, don't normally run a fever, for starters.

I totally agree with MamaBas.  I also don't want to give advice if people are being liberal with the truth.  The OP might not be, but then that leaves some things unanswered...

Hi Mishelly1,
I would take your puppy back to the vets as he is so much discomfort and I ask them to look at him again.
Where any other tests carried out apart from his temperature being taken, xrays, scans, or bloodtests?
I'm sure your vet would be happy to take another look and observe his behaviour/ listen to your concerns since your first visit, and do whats best for the puppy in the way of maybe a treatment plan.

Sorry admin but you really cannot berate the wise and generous members of this forum for becoming less than sanguine in response to yet another( probably ) case of  thoughtless, irresponsible and profit orientated breeding. Breeding a litter in an upstairs flat -what kind of preparation for the world is that going to be? People need to be confronted with the need to take responsibility for their actions. This puppy needs veterinary care and the breeder a ( virtual) slap on the wrist,or whatever.

Still hoping the the new law will put a stop to all of this . Beginning to think it will not !

People come to us for advice and help. You may not agree with what they have done or how they have gone about it but, the bottom line is that they are asking for help. That does not give anyone the right to dissect someone else's posts and use it to belittle them. Everyone is welcome here and we will not tolerate people being driven away because a small minority do not think they should be here or have the right to ask their questions.

We very much appreciate all of our members and the time and advice they offer. However, we will not tolerate bullying and that is the way this thread was heading.
