Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Barf for a lab puppy.

I have a 5 mth old lab puppy who has never had a settled tummy on any of the commercial dog foods.
I used to feed BARF to my older dogs 2 yrs ago but gave it up due to the distance involved in obtaining chicken. I was worried about raising pups on the diet and I also had one dog who would only eat the meat and no fruit and veg etc.
I feel for my 5 month old pup this is the only way forward she only weighs just over 10kgs at present and is very small. Is there anyone who can help with what I should feed in a typical week. Also what vitamins I need to feed her whilst on BARF.
I know when I was feeding BARF before I had the fittest dogs I had ever had but I worry about raising a pup on this diet!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Nicolla,

You could get the two Ian Billinghurst books, Grow Your Pup With Bones and Give A dog A Bone.
I used these with Sonny and they are a brilliant source of information although to be honest, I don't follow them to the letter.
As for vitamins, my feeling is that of your dogs' diet is varied enough, like us, he should be getting enough from the food. That's perhaps not the case but I'm sure that there are many on the board who will answer your query with a lot more expertise than I have.
I have a lab puppy too and at the moment he's half raw fed and doing really well.

Regards

Ruth

Hi Nicolla, you can feed other meats besides chicken to your pup. I started my 2 lab puppies on the raw diet when they were about 4/5mths old although I used the Pitcairn diet. Then changed them a couple of mths later to the Billinghurst diet & I can honestly say they have done marvelous on it, they will be 2yrs in April. Here are the foods I feed them on, chicken, whole, wings, necks & carcasses. Rabbit, whole or pieces. Lamb, breast, ribs & meat. Pork, ribs, bones, trotters, tongue & meat. Beef, ribs, bones, heart & meat. Quails whole. Liver & kidneys sometimes, as mine get enough eating whole animals. Turkey, necks, meat. Sardines, trout, salmon when it`s on offer :) and fruit & veg & eggs, so you see there is a wide range of foods to choose from. My lot this wk have had rabbit, quail, beef bones, beef meat & heart, pork meat, sardines, tonight they having ch/wings & beef heart. With the Pitcairn diet you can supplement half the meat with pulses for variety. Would you be able to get any of these? There is a couple of firms in UK that do raw meats for dogs with vegs added & do deliveries, one is called Prizechoice & the other is Anglian Meat Products, you could have a look at the website for them. HTH.
