Hi... I have a 12 week old puppy we got him when he was 8 weeks and he slept right through only barked etc when needing the toilet (which was once during the night) now he’s just over 12 week and he’s started barking soon as you put him to bed and through the night on & off. I go down take him out for the toilet and put him back (making little noise)

He walks over to the sofa as if to say he wants to sleep on there, but I don’t trust him all night/day out of a cage yet. He’s fine when he’s left through the day (neighbours listen for him) but recently on a night he’s started barking ANY help appreciated :)

Is it possible for you to have his crate up with you in your bedroom, alongside your bed at night?   I'd suggest he's hating finding himself alone - again!   And you will have to take him out once overnight to empty, for now so that's quite normal.  It does also sound as if he's spending a lot of time crated, never mind on his own during the week-days?    Is it possible to have him in a room where 'mistakes' aren't a major drama ..... with a baby gate across the door (kitchen/utility?)

No dog, social animals, enjoy spending long hours alone and crated (best practice for a puppy is about 2 hours in a crate in the daytime + overnight of course, extending to 4 hours max by day).   You don't say what breed, but hounds especially hate spending what sounds like the majority of a working week alone.   Puppies should be able to run around when not sleeping, so their bones, joints and muscles develop correctly - plus their mental needs.

Yep, crate upstairs or even just in a different location can help so he feels more secure - e.g. lounge instead of kitchen.

You do sound to be expecting a lot from a baby.  Which is what he is.  I agree that he should be next to your bed at night.  And he's spending far, far too long alone, poor lad. 

Can you not arrange for him to spend his day with company (friends who don't work, or a dog sitter.)  My worry is that you are setting him up for separation anxiety.

Can I just clarify he’s not left all day everyday and when  I go to work I’m back for 2 and my neighbours comes in and checks on him/walks etc. So he’s not left for long periods of time at all a couple of hours at the most.

Thank u for clarifying as it sounded like.he was left most of the day .can u take him and his crate into your bedroom at night as others suggested ? Definitely  worth a try as he will know u are there and feel more secure

You have someone WALK your 12 week old puppy ? For how long ? Do they lead train him at the same time ? How long is he actually left totally alone for ?
