Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Puppy not increased birth weight in one week

I am posting for a friend and hoping that some of you will have some gems of advice for us.  Litter of 8 puppies now 6 days old.  One little pup hasnt increased his birth weight at all in all that time.  He is seemingly normal in every way.  Has been checked for cleft palate, pee and poo ok and umbilical ok too.  Nutridrops due to arrive tomorrow.  Any ideas?

My own experience if no weight gain in that long despite feeding and topping up, there may be internal issues that are not yet easy to detect.

If no gain after supplementary feeding it may be best to let the pup go.

As breeders we should be aiming to rear healthy pups.

Thanks Brainless, I shall pass that on.

Sounds a bit drastic to let an otherwise heathy pup go just because he hasn't gained.
Is he warm? feeding ok? content?
I had one who lost weight following birth and took until a week old to get back to his birth weight - he received extra feeds throughout the night during this time. We spent so much time and effort on him so ended up keeping him, he stayed small but is now 3 years old.

I'm with Brainless here. Never again will I rear an undersized pup, having had one live to adulthood only to have to be pts at 18.mths due to neurological problems related to the small size, which weren't apparent until adulthood. Nature does know best.

A pup not gaining for 6 days is unlikely to be normal if it has been feeding well, or been topped up.

Same happened to me, after 12 days the vet advised to put her to sleep very sad considering she was acting normal otherwise.
