Hi all,
I have a dog with a deep wound to his pastern area, some parts of his tendon show, but it's not infected.

He is currently being dressed (by the vet) with a manuka honey foam dressing, fleece and then vet wrap.  The wound is making a really good response and has large pink edges after only 2 days.  Is there a better dressing or method as I've said that I'll do it to keep costs down pending an operation.?

If the wound doesn't improve poor Louis will be amputated, in part due to his brachial nerve paralysis.  I really want to avoid this as I think his shoulder has a high chance of gettng better but only if his wound heals well....

Manuka honey dressings are very good for both humans and animals.  As it is so serious and doing well i would be inclined not to touch but continue as u are. Cost wise u maybe able to get a prescription and order on line .that can reduce cost

Thank you for your support.  I don't think I'd forgive myself if I didn't give him half a chance. The prescription idea is a good one - worth asking about anyhow. Thank u :-)

With a deep wound injury as you have described, I would be inclined to let my vet continue with the care and any medication.
I would not self treat or self dress unless I had discussed this with my vet first.

I agree with wait ok .if the vet can teach u how to redress and then keep an eye in6 how it's going at regular intervals that is route I would go .wounds particular ones as serious as this sounds really need a professional overview.  I treat simple ones my self but wouldn't with more serious ones  .

Slightly off topic but last year my elderly dad was told he’d have to have his big toe amputated due to a diabetic ulcer. My sister dressed the wound every day with silver dressing and he was on a very strong long term antibiotic. The toe was saved and even the specialist said it was a miracle. I don’t know if you can use silver dressings on dogs but might be worth a look.

Assuming u mean colloidal silver yes they can be used on dogs
