In my case it's now grandkids rather than kids. I let the dogs run free and put the grandchildren in the dog crate (joke). I'm lucky that all of my grandchildren love the dogs and they're very good at entertaining each other. Things can be a little fraught at the moment, toilet training a toddler and a puppy and I've come quite close to sitting the puppy on the toilet and putting my granddaughter out in the garden. The grandchildren have to be very tidy with their toys, leave any out and they're fair game for the dogs. Taking the dogs for a walk is a great way of passing time with the grandchildren, it's a race to see who can find the muddiest puddles. There's no need to clean up any food the grandchildren drop at mealtimes, the dogs catch it before it hits the floor.

By having a really understanding husband who knows that the dogs and dog showing are my way of chilling out. He will come with me to shows if I ask but is also happy to stay at home and mind everything else. My kids are now adults so I have to put up with them moaning about the dogs (have said before that my boys are cat people not dog lovers) but they all acknowledge how important the dogs are to me.

Sell the kids...keep the dogs !

My personal opinion, the house space and what kind of animal would be a critical choice. If you are living in small apartment or condominium, I can say you should go for the small breed of dog or just a cat or both and your kids deserve more space to be active and have fun around the house. Maybe this article could be useful to decide what pet you want to adopt so as your kids will react good and play well with your pets.

In the end, you know your kids better since you raise them. My priority would be kids first then the pets.

I think if you need to ask the question then perhaps fitting in a dog or other pet at this time may not be right.

Just read that article.if anyone used thay to decide they would be getting a very odd idea of what either species are like and what they need or how they behave . To the  point  of givingbad information. All a cat needs is a shoe box with holes for a home ???? And a litter box

None of my cats would fit into a shoe box!!!

Just read article what a lot of misconceptions and downright bad advice. One minute cats need a shoebox and a litter tray further down they are high maintenance???

Boys can wrestle with a dog??? There is someone on a breed FB page having trouble with a dog at 2 years old because he wrestled with it from a pup

No kids here either (completely by choice). I’d much rather have pets!
